Your open thread for Sunday Night Football
Week 1 of the 2024 NFL Season marches on with Sunday Night Football featuring the Detroit Lions vs. The Los Angeles Rams.
You can watch tonight’s game on NBC, with kick-off at 8:20 p.m. (eastern).
The Rams and Lions feature two of the top offenses in the NFL a year ago, with the Rams finishing 8th in scoring while the Lions finished 5th.
The Lions come into the game favored by 4.5 points, per FanDuel Sportsbook. But as we’ve seen so far, the opening weeks of the NFL season are unpredictable at best.
That said, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the Lions are favored to win.
When we last saw them in a meaningful game, the Lions were facing the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship. The Lions are one of the favorites to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LIX, though that’s certainly a ways away.
The Rams, meanwhile, still feature Matt Stafford, Cooker Kupp, and Puka Nacua on offense — not to mention the mind of Sean McVay. However, their defense features a massive hole following the retirement of defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Los Angeles added SUNY Albany — turned FSU — defensive end Jared Verse in the 2024 NFL Draft to 2023 draftee Byron Young, but can any combination of players replace a presence like Donald?
