This week’s opponent Assessing Jayden Daniels’ Rookie of the Week-winning performance | PFF While Daniels’ 65.4% completion percentage is a solid figure, the Commanders weren’t asking him to make too many difficult throws, as his average depth of target in Week 1 was just 5.5 yards, ahead of only Daniel Jones among starting quarterbacks. To make matters worse, only 14.1% of Daniels’ passing yardage came through the air; the other 85.9% of it was after-the-catch yards from his receivers. The next lowest air yardage rate belonged to Tua Tagovailoa, who more than doubled Daniels, at 29.4%. Five keys to Washington getting a home win over New York | Commanders.com The Buccaneers brought constant pressure on Jayden Daniels in Week 1, resulting in two sacks. Daniels was able to evade the pressure on several snaps, but it resulted in him carrying the ball 16 times which is not a consistent formula for success. The Indianapolis Colts today released their Friday injury report for Week 2 of the NFL season ahead of their Sunday game against the Green Bay Packers. The final practice report for #INDvsGB: pic.twitter.com/2nYDOoj6yf — Indianapolis Colts (@Colts) September 13, 2024 Safety Julian Blackmon has been listed as OUT for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers due to a shoulder injury. Blackmon has been unable to practice all week with the shoulder injury he appears to have sustained in the game against the Texans. With Blackmon being ruled out expect either Rodney Thomas or newly re-signed Rodney Harrison to start in his place. If it’s Thomas then Nick Cross will stay at strong safety but if it is Harrison then Cross will shift over to free safety. Wide receiver Josh Downs is listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sunday’s game against the Packers with an ankle injury. Downs has been limited at practice all week due to an ankle injury he sustained during training camp. Downs has ramped up his rehab this week being able to practice although it has been limited. If Downs is unable to play this week expect rookie Adonai Mitchell to get the start in his place again. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner is listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sunday’s game against the Packers with a back injury. Buckner injured his back against the Texans late in the game and has been unable to practice all week. Buckner appears to be a true game time decision. If he is unable to play expect a rotation of Taven Bryan and Adetomia Adebawore at the 3-tech position. Defensive end Kwity Paye is listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sunday’s game against the Packers with a hamstring injury. Paye has missed two practices this week but did manage to participate today although it was limited. If Paye is unable to play Sunday expect Tyquan Lewis to start in his place at defensive end.
Raiders film room: Brock Bowers shines during his NFL debut
Photo by Stephen Maturen/Getty Images Bowers could be the Raiders first round draft success since 2019 The Las Vegas Raiders on draft night were expected to take a tackle, quarterback, or cornerback at 13. When the pick came around, one of the draft’s best players was on the board. The Raiders selected Brock Bowers out of Georgia even though they had a tight end with high potential on the roster. Bowers was a two-time Mackey Award winner and a standout at Georgia. He helped them win two national championships and was a dangerous threat as a receiver. It was expected for him to have an impact on the Raiders offense and in Week 1 we saw that came into fruition. Bowers led the Raiders in targets with eight and had six receptions for 58 yards. He was used in the slot and lined up in line as a tight end. Fans were able to see his talent as a route runner and he even showed himself as a blocker. On this 26-yard catch in the second quarter, he ran a route that has put Travis Kelce in the hall of fame. The route concept is called a blaze out which is selling the post and turning it into an out route. Bowers executes this perfectly having the linebacker rush back after the play action only to lose Bowers in the process. It ended up being a big play against the Raiders. Bowers is definitely has the chance to be special. Watch how sells the over route with his eyes before breaking back outside. Chiefs run this play a lot of with Kelce. pic.twitter.com/7jLC4HyfBj — Marcus Johnson (@TheMarcJohnNFL) September 9, 2024 He displayed his talent in the slot as well. In the play below he is lined up one on one versus Derwin James. He will be running a slant route and does a good job vs press getting square creating a two-way go. He does a jab step outside to create separation with a good ball from Minshew for the 8-yard catch. Could post Brock Bowers all day. 1 on 1 vs Derwin James. Easy work on the slant with a quick jab step and arm over. pic.twitter.com/XX5vvC0EUh — Marcus Johnson (@TheMarcJohnNFL) September 9, 2024 On this play, it shows his nuance as a route runner. He will be running a dig from the in line tight-end position. When he releases he stems outside which helps keep the corner back and play the chance of an out route. Instead, we see Bowers break inside with plenty of separation and get a first down with the pass from Minshew. Another great route by Bowers on the dig. No loss of motion out his break. pic.twitter.com/KcuAvwYbp6 — Marcus Johnson (@TheMarcJohnNFL) September 9, 2024 If Bowers can continue to grow as a route runner and blocker it could be the Raiders’ best first-round draft pick this decade. Bowers has the potential to become one of the best tight ends in football and it was exhibited last Sunday vs the Los Angeles Chargers.
Sean McDermott: Bills will be without Terrel Bernard for extended period
Not good: Sean McDermott: Bills will be without Terrel Bernard for extended period Nick Wojton The Buffalo Bills defense had several players step up in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins. That’s going to have to continue. Following the Bills’ 31-10 win over the Dolphins (1-1), head coach Sean McDermott updated the injury status of linebacker Terrel Bernard. Bernard’s injury occurred during the first quarter and the Bills (2-0) reported the linebacker sustained a pectoral injury. On Friday, McDermott said Bernard is slated to miss “multiple weeks.” The coach added injured reserve is not out of the question, either: Already down one starting linebacker in Matt Milano (bicep) for an extended period, losing Bernard is not ideal. In Miami, Baylon Spector entered the game when Bernard went down. Spector ended the contest with a team-high 10 tackles, as did Dorian Williams. Moving forward, Spector and Williams are the likely starters for Buffalo’s defense at linebacker. While the Bills did get good efforts out of Spector and Williams in Week 2, it’s going to be a huge ask for those to continue going forward. Buffalo will have their fingers crossed. Bills Wire will provide updates on Bernard as information is made available.
Five Good Questions with Niners Nation
We get this week’s insider perspective Once again, it’s time for us to get some intel on the Minnesota Vikings’ opponent from the folks who run that team’s blog here on SB Nation. This week, the Vikings will play host to the defending NFC champs, the San Francisco 49ers, and that means talking with the folks from Niners Nation. I’ve exchanged some questions with Marc Delucchi of NN, and here are the answers he sent my way. Once the answers that I provided to the questions Marc provided me are up on Niners Nation, I’ll post them here. 1) The Niners moved the ball up and down the field against the Jets in their season opener but had to settle for a lot of field goals, including a couple in the red zone. With all the weapons they have on offense, is there reason for concern for the Niners on this front yet? The 49ers had the best redzone efficiency in the NFL last season, so it’s reasonable to expect some regression in 2024. However, by no means is there reason for concern yet. Add in the unusual preseason circumstances surrounding Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams, and it seems reasonable that the Niners will need a little more time to find a rhythm in those circumstances. Granted, that could make them a bit more vulnerable to an upset. 2) Last season, the Niners lost their outstanding safety, Talanoa Hufanga, to a torn ACL. He’s listed on the injury report as being limited in practice after missing the opener. Do you think he’ll be back against the Vikings this week and, if so, how big a difference will he make for the San Francisco defense? Given how cautious the 49ers tend to be around artificial turf, I lean toward Hufanga sitting for another week. If he does take the field, though, he immediately adds an incredible playmaking energy to an already loaded defense. Since Hufanga first found his way into the 49ers secondary, he has consistently found his way to the ball. Hufanga has made just 27 starts over the last two seasons. In those games, he has 149 tackles, 12 passes defended, 7 interceptions, 6 tackles for loss, 5 quarterback hits, and 2 sacks. That wild level of production from the safety position tells you how much his presence could change the game. (NOTE: Since I received the answers to these questions from Marc, Hufanga was officially listed as doubtful by the Niners and likely won’t play on Sunday.) 3) Brock Purdy led the Niners through the postseason and to the Super Bowl last season and was on the shortlist for Most Valuable Player for much of the year. He’s in his third season, which means contract extension talks are coming in the near future. Do you think Purdy is worthy of potentially being the next “highest-paid quarterback” in the NFL? I’ve consistently been on the lower side of evaluating Purdy. From the jump, he looked clearly better than any other quarterback had under Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco, but I was also pretty consistently critical of Jimmy Garoppolo. In terms of how Purdy stacks up against other signalcallers around the league, Purdy isn’t highest-paid worthy. But that’s not how the market works. The fact is, Purdy is easily the best quarterback the Niners have found under Shanahan (who has made several questionable decisions evaluating quarterbacks) and barring a bad season, he should be in line to command a record-setting deal. 4) Give us one player on each side of the ball for the Niners that Vikings fans might not know about that you think will play a key role in the Niners’ success on Sunday. 49ers rookie right guard Dominick Puni has quickly secured a spot along a Niners offensive line that really lacks impact players outside of Trent Williams. Puni’s quick emergence as an above-average right guard would be a massive way to lessen the unit’s reliance on Williams and make up for some shortcomings elsewhere on the line. The recipe for beating the 49ers involves a lot of pressure upfront, and making Puni look like a rookie is one way to do that. Defensively, Maliek Collins was acquired this offseason to replace Arik Armstead on the interior line. Armstead was a mainstay in San Francisco for nearly a decade and left some big shoes to fill. Collins was quietly productive throughout his career with the Texans and has a chance to take his production to the next level alongside Nick Bosa, Javon Hargrave, and Leonard Floyd. 5) Christian McCaffrey was a surprising late scratch for the Niners in the season opener and the rumors are swirling that he won’t play on Sunday, either. We saw the Niners have success against the Jets in his absence, but how much does the offense change without McCaffrey in the backfield? Shanahan’s offense is built around creating indecisiveness in the defense. McCaffrey is a perfect piece for that because he is such a dynamic rusher and receiver. Without McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel is really the only other weapon the Niners can say that about. That’s still plenty to play around with, especially with George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk running routes, but McCaffrey’s presence is what takes the Niners offense from elite to historic. Thanks to Marc for taking the time to answer our questions this week!
Tight end Davis Allen ruled out for Sunday and it creates roster problems
Davis Allen ruled out for Sunday’s tilt with the Cardinals | Photo by Brooke Sutton/Getty Images Add another player to the Rams walking wounded The Los Angeles Rams will be missing another primary back up, tight end Davis Allen, in this Sunday’s intra-divisional tilt with the Arizona Cardinals. Although Allen had been listed as ‘doubtful” on the Rams three official injury reports, Jourdan Rodrigue is reporting that the second-year tight end won’t play due to a bad back. Davis Allen (back) has now been ruled out. — Jourdan Rodrigue (@JourdanRodrigue) September 13, 2024 Final injury report for the week. Dotson, Durant, Lake all expected to play pic.twitter.com/AYYLh54ilX — Jourdan Rodrigue (@JourdanRodrigue) September 13, 2024 Rams in a quandary? The loss of Allen adds to the negative ripple effect injuries are creating and makes roster decisions difficult. The two standard practice squad elevations now take on a much more important meaning. Where should the Rams use the elevations? At tight end? With the Davis ruling, now only Hunter Long remains as a backup to starter Colby Parkinson and Long has had a career-long injury history of his own. It would appear to be a simple fix, just bring up Nikola Kalinic or Miller Forristall. Or should they even bother with either? After all, the Rams are almost exclusively a three wide receiver team. At wide receiver? There are currently only five receivers on the active roster. Although in theory, that should be enough, it still creates another possible positional shortage. Puka Nacua’s addition to the Injured Reserve List earlier this week makes the L.A. wide outs room a little thin. On the offensive line? Kevin Dotson and Rob Havenstein are both nicked up and how bad the injuries actually are will never get out of the Rams building. Lack of cohesion will make the L.A. line susceptible to blitzes, both real and simulated, twists, stunts, and loops. Is an elevation be the right move? Active Geron Christian is a veteran tackle with NFL starts under his belt, but only got into town mid-week. Possible elevation AJ Arcuri certainly didn’t fare well last week, but the Cardinals don’t have a player like Aidan Hutchinson on the defense. Now where the problem worsens. At cornerback? Although he doesn’t have an injury designation, Tre’Davious White did not practice on a Friday. It’s normal for a vet to get a rest day, Sean McVay has been doing during his whole tenure, but on a Friday after Week 1? Granted, he’s coming off major surgery, but still a bit out of order. Cobie Durant is a bigger question mark, he hardly practiced at all this week with a turf toe. The two backups, Josh Wallace and Charles Woods are rookie undrafted free agents. Can’t really look to the safeties for a lot of help, the best cover man, Quentin Lake was limited late in the week. Ahkello Witherspoon, being elevated would appear to be the prudent choice. Where should the Rams utilize their two practice squad elevations?
Week 2 picks: Who are the NFL experts taking in Ravens vs. Raiders
Week 2 picks: Who are the NFL experts taking in Ravens vs. Raiders glenn erby M&T Bank Stadium will be rocking 48 hours from now during Baltimore’s much-anticipated home opener against the Raiders. Both teams are looking to avoid 0-2 starts on the season. The Ravens will look to get running back Derrick Henry more involved in the offense, while DC Zach Orr must scheme up a way to contain Raiders star pass catcher Davante Adams. On offense, a retooled offensive line must find a way to corral Las Vegas All-Pro pass rusher Maxx Crosby on the edge. Bengals at Chiefs odds, expert predictions and staff picks for Week 2
Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images The Bengals are huge underdogs to the Chiefs. A tale of two weeks for the Cincinnati Bengals. They had everyone believing in them in Week 1 against the New England Patriots. One flat performance later, the Bengals are 0-1 and set to face the Kansas City Chiefs while on the other side of the spectrum as big underdogs in Week 2. Odds According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Bengals are 5.5-point underdogs on the road against the Chiefs. That is surprisingly close, considering the weeks these two teams had. It definitely seems like the oddsmakers still believe Cincinnati will return to form. The total is set at 47.5 points, indicating they expect some offense from both sides. That is tied for the second-highest total for Week 2. Expert picks Only 1 of CBS Sports’ experts took Cincinnati All 11 of ESPN’s experts took Kansas City NFL Pick Watch — which takes into account picks from across the web — has the Bengals receiving 4% of picks. This week reminds me of writing about this team during the Andy Dalton and Marvin Lewis era in the midst of their playoff appearance streak. After a few years, you could tell it was a good team, but they had to prove they were worthy of being considered a contender. It was hard to fault people for doubting them because they consistently struggled against other contenders. These Bengals aren’t on that level, but we’ve seen some doubt if this team is on par with the ones that went to a Super Bowl and two straight AFC Championships. If they want to be considered on that level they have to prove it. The NFL is a “what have you done for me lately?” league, and Cincinnati came out flat at home against a bad team that contenders should be able to handle. That all can be forgotten by this team taking care of business in Kansas City. Staff Picks Here are our writer’s picks for Week 2. How do you see Bengals vs. Chiefs playing out?
