Giants news, 9/19: Eli Manning’s Hall of Fame bid, Malik Nabers, Greg Joesph, more headlines
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports New York Giants news for Thursday Good morning, New York Giants fans! From Big Blue View Eli Manning officially a Hall of Fame nominee Giants vs. Browns, Week 3: For Giants, avoiding disaster won’t be easy Giants Greg Joseph embracing nomadic life of an NFL placekicker Giants-Browns injury report: CB Nick McCloud still not practicing Giants can thank Nick Gates for making Patrick Johnson available to them Giants Reacts Survey: Is it time to panic? Giants at Cleveland Browns 2024, Week 2: Everything you need to know Other Giant observations Presser Points: Takeaways from Coach Brian Daboll | Giants.com Daboll was asked if he wants to see “desperation” from his team this week. “I want to see consistency like we talk about every week. Go in, prepare the right way, come out, play a good football game, do good in situations, play together. Each week is its own week, and we’ll just focus on the Browns this week.” Can Malik Nabers lead the NFL in receptions It’s not all doom and gloom for Giants. Even at 0-2, there are slivers of hope for future | The Athletic Safety Tyler Nubin has played 100 percent of the defensive snaps so far this year, and his skills as a communicator have stood out to defensive passing game coordinator/DBs coach Jerome Henderson. The second-rounder is already third on the team with 12 total tackles. Fourth-round tight end Theo Johnson has played 83 percent of the offensive snaps, far outpacing Chris Manhertz (36 percent) and Daniel Bellinger (16 percent). Johnson has only tallied 18 yards on one reception, but that he’s on the field so much so early is encouraging. Dexter Lawerence on this week “Personally, I’m pissed because I hate losing with a passion. I take that hard, losing – I really don’t like it. That’s something that I’m not going to keep accepting. I want to see this team grow and be as good as we are throughout the week in practice.” – Dexter Lawrence pic.twitter.com/n0gtI5cBCN — Giants Videos (@SNYGiants) September 18, 2024 Brian Burns: Inside rush plan, realizing NY Giants purpose | The Record When Burns starts to study an opponent, he doesn’t write anything down at first. He’ll grab his tablet and just watch two or three games to get a feel of the overall offense. Burns prefers to initially visualize things, so he pays attention to set points a quarterback may take on certain drop backs, cadence and body language of the offensive linemen that will be tasked to block him. There’s also importance placed on how a team will look to attack the Giants, especially up front in certain circumstances. Andrew Thomas’ Giants challenge all too familiar for Joe Thomas | New York Post “Team success brings individual success,” Andrew Thomas said. “The mentality is to win because you are winning for a reason. If you are not winning, try to figure out how to win. That’s where we’re at right now. In 2022, we went to the playoffs, it was the most fun I’ve had. It’s breaking that mentality of losing and having the mindset that we’re going to finish and play to a standard.” 32 NFL observations after Week 2 | PFF For the first time in his career, Devin Singletary broke the double-digit mark for forced missed tackles as a rusher. His 10 were the most of any runner in Week 2. Daniel Jones on where he sees the team mentally right now “Everyone realizes our record. Everybody understands that. But no one is discouraged. It’s a long season and we’ve got a good football team.” – Daniel Jones on the Giants’ 0-2 start pic.twitter.com/oVCLtBEm1N — Giants Videos (@SNYGiants) September 18, 2024 Panic meter for every 0-2 NFL team: How worried should each franchise be? | PFF New York Giants: Extremely high. Shane Bowen’s defense could fare better as the season progresses, especially expecting more from its three-tiered talent. But it’s hard to fathom that Big Blue’s offense will improve much from its ranking of 26th in expected points allowed per play. With nothing but formidable matchups upcoming, things could get ugly fast — potentially leading to Jones’ benching. Will Giants fire Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen? Keep an eye on this key factor (beyond just losing) | NJ.com But first, they need to decide the fate of Daboll and Schoen, who simply have not shown — early this season — the “significant improvement” Mara said he wanted to see. And if fan apathy starts creeping in, amid more losing, Daboll and Schoen are in serious trouble. The game to watch, after Cleveland, is next Thursday night at home against the Cowboys, who beat the Giants 40-0 in Week 1 last season at MetLife Stadium. An 0-3 Giants team losing to Dallas on that Thursday night in a stadium full of Cowboys fans would surely infuriate Mara. This week’s opponent David Njoku unlikely to return to Browns lineup this week | Pro Football Talk Njoku missed last Sunday’s win over the Jaguars with an ankle injury and head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters at a Wednesday press conference that he is unlikely to return to action this week. Stefanski also said that he’s hopeful cornerback Denzel Ward’s shoulder injury will allow him to play more than the 11 snaps he was able to play last Sunday. Tackle Dawand Jones (knee) and running back Pierre Strong (hamstring) are not expected to practice on Wednesday. 32 NFL observations after Week 2 | PFF Denzel Ward is one of four defenders to have forced four pass incompletions on the season along with Quinyon Mitchell, Benjamin St-Juste and Paulson Adebo. Terrell Suggs, Marshal Yanda among 1st year Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees for 2025
Terrell Suggs, Marshal Yanda among 1st year Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees for 2025 glenn erby Baltimore has a rich history of NFL legends in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the organization could have two more superstars join that list. On Wednesday, the NFL announced that Terrell Suggs and Marshal Yanda were two of 167 modern-era players nominated for the Hall of Fame. The list will be reduced to 50 in mid-October. Suggs is a seven-time Pro Bowler and ranks eighth on the all-time sacks list with 139 over his 17 seasons. Suggs won two Super Bowls: one with the Ravens in 2012 and another with the Kansas City Chiefs as a late-season addition in 2019. He was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2003, logging 12 sacks. Suggs was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 when he had a career-high 14 sacks and seven forced fumbles. An eight-time Pro Bowler who was dominant when healthy, Yanda was a two-time first-team All-Pro (2014 & 2015) and earned five second-team All-Pro nods. He was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. The duo now has a chance to join Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed as first-ballot Hall of Famers.
Indianapolis Colts Injury Report: K Gay And DE Latu Both Miss Practice
Photo by Todd Rosenberg/Getty Images The Indianapolis Colts released their Wednesday practice report. The Indianapolis Colts today released their Wednesday injury report for Week 3 of the NFL season ahead of their Sunday game against the Chicago Bears. Wednesday’s practice report for #CHIvsIND: pic.twitter.com/3QtaJVZ5nR — Indianapolis Colts (@Colts) September 18, 2024 Kicker Matt Gay missed practice today due to a quadriceps injury. Gay had been dealing with a hernia injury during training camp which kept him out of week 1 and now is dealing with a quadriceps injury. Gay has been poor kicking so far this year and it may be due to the injuries. Defensive end Laiatu Latu missed practice today due to a hip injury. Latu injured his hip in the second half of last Sunday’s game and had to exit the game. Reports today said that Latu did get positive news that it wasn’t a serious hip injury but it would be day to day. Safety Julian Blackmon returned to practice today after missing all of last weeks practice and Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. If the Colts can get Blackmon back in the secondary it would be a huge boost to a group that struggles against Packers Malik Willis. Wide receiver Josh Downs returned to practice today after missing all of last weeks practice and Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. Downs injured his ankle during training camp and had been out since. If the Colts can get Down back in the line up it would be a huge help for Anthony Richardson.
Raiders-Panthers injury report: Key rookie may debut Sunday
Jackson Powers-Johnson | Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images Raiders are hopeful offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson plays against Carolina There appears to be a solid chance that Las Vegas Raiders’ rookie guard Jackson Powers-Johnson will be ready to make his NFL debut Sunday when the Raiders open their home schedule against the Carolina Panthers at Allegiant Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. PT. The second-round draft pick from Oregon has missed the first two games after overcoming an illness. Powers-Johnson missed much of training camp as well as he was dealing with a concussion. Wednesday, Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said if he were a betting man, he’d “hope to see 58 out there.” The Raiders have used both, free-agent additions Cody Whitehair and Andrus Peat at left guard. So, if he’s healthy enough to play, there is a reasonable chance to think Powers-Johnson will play against the Panthers. Monday, Pierce said lineup changes on the offensive line were possible in an attempt to kickstart the Las Vegas running game, which was lacking in the first two games. Meanwhile, regarding star defensive end Maxx Crosby and his ankle, Pierce said “we’ll see how the week goes.” Crosby injured his ankle late in the win over Baltimore on Sunday and was limping heavily after the game. Crosby, who hasn’t missed a play this season, has never missed a game in his six-season career despite having several ailments. The Raiders released an estimated injury report after Wednesday’s walk-through practice. Crosby was among those listed as limited and linebacker Divine Deablo was listed as out with two injuries. #Raiders injury report: pic.twitter.com/rpIBetbypW — Tashan Reed (@tashanreed) September 18, 2024 In other Raiders’ notes: Pierce noted that Raiders’ assistant coach Marvin Lewis can provide a scouting report on new Carolina starting quarterback Andy Dalton. Lewis was the head coach in Cincinnati when Dalton was drafted in 2011. Pierce expects Dalton to help the Panthers on third down based on his experience. Pierce said the Raiders knew they had a “blue chipper” in rookie tight end Brock Bowers and he can now say it after Bowers has shown it in the regular season. The first-round pick from Georgia leads all NFL tight ends with 15 catches for 156 yards. @nfl what true leadership looks like #maxxcrosby #gardnerminshew #lasvegas #raiders #nfl ♬ original sound – NFL Pierce said pep talk Crosby gave quarterback Gardner Minshew after an interception Sunday was an example of Crosby’s leadership and how close the roster is.
Bills’ James Cook named Offensive Player of the Week vs. Dolphins
Bills’ James Cook named Offensive Player of the Week vs. Dolphins Bills’ James Cook named Offensive Player of the Week vs. Dolphins Nick Wojton Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week following his team’s win against the Miami Dolphins. In the Week 2 outing, Buffalo won 31-10 and Cook played a huge part. Cook notched three touchdowns, all coming in the first half. Along with his scores, Cook had 78 yards on 11 carries (7.1 average). His lone catch went for 17 yards and concluded in the end zone. Cook’s OPOTW honor is the second of his career. The first came in Week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. Cook was named a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career last year as well. Bills Wire will continue to provide all updates throughout the 2024 season. Rams put 2 on IR, but there’s a glimmer of hope for Cooper Kupp
Photo by Nic Antaya/Getty Images The Rams are not putting Cooper Kupp on IR yet, but Jonah Jackson, John Johnson out at least 4 weeks The Los Angeles Rams placed center Jonah Jackson and safety John Johnson III on injured reserve on Wednesday, but Cooper Kupp has so far avoided an IR stint. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, “there are currently no plans to place WR Cooper Kupp on injured reserve”. Kupp was in a walking boot after Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals and there was speculation about a long-term absence. The first real news we have from the team on the situation is overall positive, because the Rams wouldn’t hesitate to put Kupp on IR if they thought he was definitely out for four games due to the fact that L.A. is already short on receivers with Puka Nacua on IR. Rams placed OL Jonah Jackson and S John Johnson III on injured reserve, sidelining them for a minimum of four games. There currently are no plans to place WR Cooper Kupp on injured reserve. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 18, 2024 The Rams will need to start their backups at center and guard for at least the next month, which at this time are Logan Bruss at guard and Beaux Limmer at center. However, A.J. Jackson does return from suspension just in time to take over for Joe Noteboom, who is also on IR. Is Sean McVay doing enough to account for injured offensive line? John Johnson was a late addition to the roster, which doesn’t necessarily speak highly of the team’s opinions of offseason additions Kam Curl and rookie Kamren Kinchens, at least as far as what they were seeing in offseason practices and training camp. Johnson then had an interception in Week 1 against Jared Goff. The only other safety on the roster besides the Kams is undrafted free agent rookie Jaylen McCollough. Tanner Ingle and Quindell Johnson are safeties on the practice squad.
WATCH: Marlon Humphrey has hilarious reaction to J.K. Dobbins saying Ravens should have re-signed him
J.K. Dobbins tells Marlon Humphrey that Ravens should have signed him WATCH: Marlon Humphrey has hilarious reaction to J.K. Dobbins saying Ravens should have re-signed him glenn erby Ravens running back Derrick Henry is 19th in the NFL in rushing yards ahead of Week 3, ten spots, and 37 yards behind quarterback Lamar Jackson. The man leading the league in rushing exited Baltimore this off-season, joining Gus Edwards, Greg Roman, and others in Los Angeles with the Chargers. Jim Harbaugh’s squad is 2-0, while the Ravens are 0-2, facing a must-win situation against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. During his most recent episode of the PunchLine Podcast, cornerback Marlon Humphrey shared a text between himself and J.K. Dobbins, where the former Ohio State running back told his friend and former teammate that Baltimore should have re-signed him. Humphrey’s reaction is hilarious and includes a “tink-tink” reference, made famous by comedian Katt Williams. Dobbins has 266 rushing yards on 27 attempts, three 20-yard runs, three 40 yards, and a season-long run of 61 yards that resulted in a touchdown. Finally healthy, Dobbins has the perfect coach and system to win a rushing title in 2024.
Rookie Report: The Offense Gets Some Help
Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images The Bengals go all in on All. Punter Ryan Rehkow continues to be the star of the Cincinnati Bengals’ rookie class, despite not actually being drafted. For the second straight game, he has looked impressive despite being used much less frequently this week. One player being used much more frequently is Erick All. The rookie tight end saw a massive increase in snaps this week and continued to impress as a blocker whilst hauling in four passes for 32 yards. All may be the most well-rounded tight end on the roster and his increased usage is a promising sign. We all got our wish as rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton finally got a couple of targets, hauling in a 47-yarder to start off the second half. Burton may not be ready for a starting role, but his big play ability gives the team an explosive option opposite Ja’Marr Chase. Giving him an increased role each week makes a lot of sense. Defensive back Daijahn Anthony has carved out a role for himself on defense. This week he had two penalties, both costly. One negated an interception by DJ Turner, and the other allowed the Chiefs to convert the final 4th down and set up the winning field goal. Neither of these penalties was egregious, but the timing could not have been much worse. Defensive backs need to have a short memory, and Anthony will need to show supreme mental toughness to overcome this one, but it sounds like his team has rallied around him. UDFA linebacker Maema Njongmeta continues to get significant work on special teams, while cornerback Josh Newton and even center Matt Lee are getting a little work in this unit. Defensive end Cedric Johnson and tight end Tanner McLachlan were once again healthy scratches, while a number of other Bengals rookies continue to struggle with injury.
Houston Texans at Minnesota Vikings: Wednesday Injury Reports
Brad Rempel-Imagn Images Let’s get the week started It’s Wednesday, and around the National Football League that means it’s time for the first injury reports of the week. Both the Houston Texans and the Minnesota Vikings have released their initial reports ahead of their Week 3 matchup at U.S. Bank Stadium, so let’s see who’s dealing with injuries to start the week. Houston Texans Did Not Participate CB Kris Boyd (hip) WR Nico Collins (hip/calf) DT Folorunso Fatukasi (shoulder) RB Joe Mixon (ankle) OL Jarrett Patterson (calf) RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring) OL Juice Scruggs (groin) Limited Participation LB Azeez Al-Shaair (shin) TE Dalton Schulz (ankle) S M.J. Stewart (knee) Full Participation No players listed The Texans have quite a few names on their injury report to start the week. There seems to be the most pessimism about Mixon thus far after he hurt an ankle on Sunday Night Football against Chicago. Both Mixon and Pierce being on the injury report would seem to increase the likelihood that Cam Akers can get in on the “revenge” narrative that has surrounded this game given the players on each side who have crossed over. Seeing Collins on the injured list is a bit of a surprise, but my guess is that he’ll be alright by Sunday. Minnesota Vikings Did Not Participate WR Jordan Addison (ankle) OT Brian O’Neill (elbow) OLB Dallas Turner (knee) Limited Participation C Garrett Bradbury (knee) WR Justin Jefferson (quad) RB Aaron Jones (hip) LB Ivan Pace Jr. (quad) OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (foot) Full Participation G Ed Ingram (tricep) WR Jalen Nailor (ankle) Pretty full report for the Vikings to start the week as well. Kevin O’Connell still doesn’t sound terribly optimistic about Addison being back for this one but we’ll see how things change through the week. We’ll have to keep an eye on Turner, too, and hope that his knee injury isn’t too serious. The team appears to be taking things easy with Jefferson early on in the week but he said that he was going to be out there on Sunday so I’m inclined to believe him. Those are your first injury reports of the week for the Vikings and the Texans, folks. Plenty of potential storylines here and we’ll be keeping an eye on them over the course of this week.
