Final score: 29 to 18. With a win on Saturday, the Eagles have officially clinched the NFC East — the first time there’s been a repeat division winner since 2004 — and also knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs. It was a slow start for the Philly team, but they really came alive in the second half. It was a very uneven performance by the Eagles offense throughout the game, but the passing game continues to look improved and the wide receivers seemed more open than they have been for most of the season. Jalen Hurts connected with A.J. Brown on nine catches for 95 yards, and with DeVonta Smith on six catches for 42 yards and a touchdown, not including the clutch throws to Dallas Goedert in the second half. They married the run and pass game pretty well, and were able to take advantage of opportunities as a result. Jake Elliott missed three field goals in the first half alone, and the offense refused to rely on him the rest of the game. Even head coach Nick Sirianni spoke at halftime and noted how both the offense and defense have been executing, but the special teams unit was an issue. If nothing else, it forced the Eagles offense to complete their drives with touchdowns, which they were able to do more consistently later in the game. The defense continued dominating, and overall, it was a much more complete team performance against the Commanders. It was a good follow-up to what they were able to do against the Raiders, and will hopefully give them something to continue to build on as they start looking ahead at the postseason. FIRST QUARTER The Commanders won the coin toss and elected to defer to put the Eagles on offense first. Will Shipley fumbles on the kick return, and Washington recovered it near the sideline. The Commanders had a short field and started out with a three-yard run, followed by a seven-yard pass by Marcus Mariota to Terry McLaurin for a first down. Running back Chris Rodriquez carried the ball the next few snaps, getting five, six, and two yards, respectively. Mariota threw an incompletion on 1st-and-goal, and missed Treylon Burks in the end zone on second down. They didn’t connect on third down either, and the Commanders were hot that Cooper DeJean didn’t get called for pass interference — DeJean made sure to jaw back a bit. Washington’s field goal team took the field and Jake Moody made it from 20 yards out. EAGLES 0, COMMANDERS 3. Will Shipley was still on return duty and carried the ball 26 yards. Eagles offense starts with Jalen Hurts under center — the QB handed the ball off to Saquon Barkley who ran it for zero yards. Hurts then carried it himself for three yards, followed by a six-yard pass to DeVonta Smith, who did everything he could to stretch for the first down. The Eagles then tried to draw the Commanders offsides, but instead had a delay of game penalty on 4th-and-1, forcing them to punt. Sydney Brown made a great play on punt coverage, and the Commanders started on their own 15 yard line. Marcus Mariota threw short to John Bates on first down, and then Chris Rodriquez picked up seven yards on second down. They continued to march down the field, with a six-yard pass to Terry McLaurin, and two three-yard plays to Jeremy McNichols. Mariota then tried to throw it deep to Treylon Burks, which was called back due to an offensive holding penalty — this put them at 3rd-and-14 with the 10-yard penalty. Eagles LB Nakobe Dean was injured on the play, but was able to leave the field under his own power. Mariota threw another incomplete pass, and the Commanders were forced to punt. Britain Covey fielded the punt and returned it 11 yards, so the Eagles offense started with the ball on their 37 yard line. Jalen Hurts started off with a big 16-yard pass to DeVonta Smith. The QB then scrambled 14 yards, followed by a 15-yard pass to A.J. Brown to keep the offense rolling. Hurts tried to connect with Smith deep into the endzone, but the WR was unable to secure the ball through the tackle. Hurts did connect with Brown on the next play for 16 yards. Saquon Barkley carried the ball into the endzone from the two-yard line, but the TD call was reversed claiming the RB didn’t cross the goal line. Unfortunately, as usual, things started to unravel, and Fred Johnson was flagged for a false start and the Eagles were pushed back five yards. Thankfully, it didn’t matter much and Hurts finally connected with Smith for a six-yard touchdown. EAGLES 7, COMMANDERS 3. The Commanders started with the ball on their 31-yard line, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt ran the ball 13 yards for to move the sticks. They then went 3-and-out thanks to a Brandon Graham sack on third down — BG’s third sack of the season. On 4th-and-11, Washington opted to punt. SECOND QUARTER Britain Covey made a fair catch, and the Eagles offense took the field. Jalen Hurts missed A.J. Brown for a deep pass, but followed that up
Eagles clinch NFC East with big win over Commanders, 29-18
NFL Week 16 Recap: Philadelphia Eagles 29, Washington Commanders 18
Despite a sloppy start that included a kickoff fumble and three missed field goals, the Eagles found their rhythm behind Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley to beat Washington 29-18 and clinch a second straight NFC East title. Hurts threw two touchdowns and Barkley rushed for 132 yards and a score as Philadelphia pulled away in the second half and sealed the win with late points.
Rams fire special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams have fired Blackburn following Thursday night’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Blackburn being fired isn’t necessarily as surprising as the overall timing. While it was somewhat expected that the Rams would look to move on from the third-year special teams coach following the season, a change with just two weeks left to play in the regular season exemplifies where the Rams special teams unit is currently. This marks the first in-season coordinator change from head coach Sean McVay. An argument can be made that Blackburn should have been fired following a 2023 season in which the Rams had one of the worst special teams units in NFL history. However, Blackburn likely should have been let go over a month ago. The Rams have four losses this season and special teams have played a role in three of them. The expectation now is that the Rams will turn to assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica for the remainder of the season. Kotwica has 10 years of experience as a special teams coordinator in the NFL. Most recently Kotwica was with the Denver Broncos in 2023 and 2024. Special teams has consistently been an issue for the Rams in the McVay era. However, as bad as things have gotten at times, McVay has never made a coaching change in-season. With the Rams sitting at 11-4 and a top-10 offense and defense, they can’t continue to lose games due to special teams. McVay firing Blackburn at this point of the season shows how dire a change was needed. See More: Los Angeles Rams News

Saturday kicks off with a late afternoon matchup (5 p.m. ET) between the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles. While there is not much at stake for the Commanders, the Eagles can clinch the NFC East with a win. While that is mostly a formality at this point—the Cowboys currently have less than a 1% chance to catch them—it also keeps them in a solid place when it comes to seeding. The Eagles currently hold the three seed at 9-5, but could easily jump to the two seed if the Packers take the NFC North lead later in the day. That game is not likely to matter to Lions fans, unless Detroit somehow manages to win the division on their own. However, the nightcap is a game all Lions fans should be intensely watching. A Packers win and the Lions’ playoff odds jump to 32%. A Bears win and the Lions’ playoff odds drop to 22%. Everything at stake—plus playoff scenarios for each outcome—are explained thoroughly here. But the long and short of it is this: if the Bears lose, the Lions suddenly have control of their own playoff destiny again: a win-out equals the postseason. So enjoy both games and you can chat about them as they happen in the comment section at the bottom of this page. Here’s how to watch both games, as well. Detroit Lions place Kerby Joseph on IR, make 2 OL moves for Steelers game
The Detroit Lions have finally placed safety Kerby Joseph on injured reserve, effectively ending the All-Pro defender’s season. Joseph has been dealing with a knee injury for essentially the entire season, but there was some brief hope he’d be able to return to the field. After suffering a setback during a recent practice, Joseph has been sidelined, and Detroit finally decided to end his season after he had missed the past eight games. Technically, Joseph would be eligible to return to the field if Detroit advances to the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, but that seems unlikely. Joseph’s season ends with 18 tackles in six games and three interceptions. Additionally, the Lions have made several offensive moves to address current injuries. Notably, they have activated guard Christian Mahogany, who has been on injured reserve for six weeks after suffering a leg fracture against the Vikings. It’s quite possible he’ll return to his starting position at left guard, although coach Dan Campbell offered some caution on Friday. Join the conversation! Wasn’t perfect, but I thought he looked pretty good,” Campbell said. “And some of it’s going to be, I know he’s a little sore today, and how he feels in today’s practice. That’s what a lot of it’s going to come down to.” The Lions have also elevated offensive lineman Kingsley Eguakun from the practice squad. That could be a bad sign for the availability of starting center Graham Glasgow. He’s been dealing with a knee injury that caused him to miss two practices this week and landed him with a questionable designation. The Lions now have several options at center, including Eguakun, Trystan Colon (who is dealing with a wrist injury of his own), and Michael Niese. Campbell said the team has been exploring all options in practice this week. “We’ve obviously worked Colon because he’s been there. I know he’s got the wrist, but he was out there working with it yesterday,” Campbell said. “Just trying to get Graham off his feet. But I mean, we’ve worked Niese, we’ve worked Kingsley. We’ve kind of just hit all around, and we’re rolling the guards, too. So, it’s really been a little bit of a revolving door trying to get a number of guys ready because there’s a lot of flex going into this game right now.” Lastly, the Lions also elevated tight end Giovanni Ricci from the practice squad for the second straight week as the Lions continue to be short-handed at tight end in the wake of injuries to Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright. NFL Week 16 betting advice: Giants-Vikings picks and props
Welcome to the New York Giants betting angle, Week 16 edition. Each week, I’m giving you my three favorite wagers for that week’s New York Giants game. My one rule: I won’t ever give you wagers that are less than -120. No gimmies here. The Giants had high hopes for a win at home last week, but ran their losing streak to eight games when they fell 29-21 to a Commanders team that came in riding their own eight-game losing streak. Big Blue stays at home this Sunday to face another losing team with nothing to play for – the 6-8 Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have disappointed after their 14-3 campaign a year ago, but they’ve won two straight behind a resurgent J.J. McCarthy. This is their third consecutive game against an NFC East opponent and they’re looking for the sweep. Much like the Giants, one of the Vikings’ priorities this season has been to try to figure out if their long-term answer at quarterback is on their current roster. The line on FanDuel is MIN -2.5, with a game total of 43.5. Temperatures in the 40s accompanied by light to moderate winds are expected in East Rutherford on Sunday afternoon, so December weather shouldn’t be an issue. My picks were 2-1 last week. Both of my props hit, but my spread bet on the G-Men missed. The line and total are stay-aways for me this week. I’m done trying to predict if on any given week these Giants will cover a number, and especially with their special teams regularly costing them points. For a team that’s 2-12, they’re maddening to handicap against the spread (7-7 ATS). Can the two JJs get on the same page?Getty Images Here are this week’s picks. All lines and odds are from FanDuel and are as of Friday, Dec. 19. Justin Jefferson Anytime TD (+125). I’ll start this week’s action with a bet with longer odds. Why not? It’s Week 16 – let’s take some risk to win some holiday shopping money! Jefferson has been invisible the last three weeks. He hasn’t topped 25 yards or scored in any of those contests – it’s the worst three-game stretch of his brilliant young career. He also only has two TD catches on the entire season. So why on earth am I taking this prop? Why am I taking something that’s this far into plus-money when I’m trying to have a winning record with my picks? And why should you consider listening to me? Good questions, all. My reasoning: I believe the slump ends Sunday, against a vulnerable Giants’ secondary that has proven all year that it can’t cover a wideout like Jefferson. Jefferson had one TD called back last week, and another slipped through his hands when McCarthy threw him a Randy Johnson fastball when he didn’t need to. I think Minnesota will make a concerted effort to end the JJ-JJ slump this week, and Jefferson will spike the football at least once. It’s contrarian, but hey, sometimes you have to zag. Aaron Jones, Sr. OVER 53.5 rushing yards (-114). The Giants can’t stop the run, and I expect a heavy dose of ground and pound from the Vikings as they try to avoid putting the game on McCarthy’s mistake-prone right arm. Jones has only bested this total three times this season, but that’s misleading as he’s been in and out of the lineup with various injuries. The main concern with this total is his backfield split with Jordan Mason. The Giants are giving up around six yards per carry over their last six games, so I don’t think Jones will need a lot of attempts to get to this total. For the season, Big Blue is allowing 153.6 rushing yards per game. Only the Bengals give up more than that, and only by a few yards. There should be enough easy yards there for both backs. Take the over. Tyrone Tracy, Jr. OVER 69.5 rushing and receiving yards (-114). Another RB over? Sure, why not. I don’t think the market is properly pricing Tracy, so let’s take advantage. Since Cam Skattebo’s season-ending injury, Tracy has gone over this total in four of six games (and remember, he got injured in one game), and his average scrimmage yards per game is almost 15 yards higher than this total. Yes, Brian Flores coordinates a really good defense, and while I think he’ll do things to confuse Jaxson Dart, that shouldn’t eat into Tracy’s effectiveness or workload. The Vikings are down a couple of key defenders, which will help. Tracy’s snap share with Devin Singletary has ping-ponged the last bunch of weeks, but against the Commanders last week, Tracy played a season-high 76% of the snaps, and tallied 97 scrimmage yards on 18 touches. He should get some looks in the passing game, just like last week. I like this prop to go over. Those are the picks for Week 16. Good luck with your wagers, and Happy Holidays! Nakobe Dean injury: Eagles LB questionable to return against Commanders

Linebacker Nakobe Dean went down after making a tackle on a deep pass by Marcus Mariota, and rolled over grabbing his left hamstring after the play. Dean was able to leave the field under his own power, and walked to the locker room, but was then listed as questionable to return. Shortly after halftime, Dean was downgraded to out. Dean has had a tough go with regard to injuries, but every time he’s healthy, he’s been hugely impactful. He was able to take the starting job back from rookie Jihaad Campbell, who had been playing pretty well for his experience level, earlier in the season. Campbell went a whole game without snaps just a few weeks ago, but DC Vic Fangio admitted that probably wasn’t ideal, and had been making a bigger effort to get the rookie on the field more in the weeks since. Now, with Dean back on the sideline, Campbell will get some useful reps down the stretch. Hopefully Dean’s issue isn’t something long term, and the Eagles could help things by being in position to control their post-season destiny — and maybe get some guys additional rest before the playoff push.
