New York Giants have no choice but to move on from Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones | Kirby Lee-Imagn Images The quarterback should not start another game We have more or less reverse-engineered game day coverage at Big Blue View, with ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’ running shortly after the game and this post coming the day after. Too bad the New York Giants can’t reverse-engineer a disastrous 2024 season. Maybe even the last six or seven seasons. I have supported Daniel Jones — when I have felt he has deserved it — for much of the past six seasons. I understood why then-GM Dave Gettleman drafted him No. 6 overall in 2019. I understood why Joe Judge stuck with Jones. I understood why Joe Schoen, rather than moving on from him after the 2022 playoff season, signed him to a contract with two years of guaranteed money rather than blowing things up and starting over. I have understood, through 10 games of this season, why head coach Brian Daboll has continued to trot Jones out as the Giants’ starting quarterback. I won’t, though, understand if Jones is still the quarterback when the Giants return from their bye to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Week 12 at MetLife Stadium. Daniel Jones just isn’t good enough. As I wrote in Sunday’s ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’, Jones’ “limitations, and the ways in which they can hold back the Giants, though, were clear” during Sunday’s humiliating 20-17 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers; a loss, incidentally, that allowed the Giants to wrest the title ‘Worst Team in Football’ from the clutches of the previously woeful Panthers. Bad ball placement led to several balls that could/should have been completions being incompletions or worse. I am thinking specifically of an early throw to Wan’Dale Robinson that led to a punt, and the fourth-quarter red zone throw to Tyrone Tracy that resulted in an interception. That was one of two red zone interception Jones threw on the day, the second consecutive week in which Jones has reverted to being a turnover machine at crucial times in the red zone. There was a throw to Malik Nabers that sailed waaaaay over his head, killing a drive. There was a skipped throw to an open Wan’Dale Robinson. A dangerous throw behind tight end Theo Johnson. I could probably go throw by throw and find more, but I don’t want to put myself through that. If this was a bad day for Jones, or if Jones was a rookie quarterback with an anticipated learning curve you would look at the positives — the second-half, the final regulation drive, the toughness he displayed — and feel good. Jones, though, is not a rookie. ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky spoke, or posted, the truth that even the most ardent Jones supporters have to recognize six years and 70 games into Jones’ NFL career: Why is everyone so surprised by Daniel Jones’ performance?!?!? This has been who he is for 95%+ of his career. It’s who he was coming out of college—it’s who he has been as a pro. — Dan Orlovsky (@danorlovsky7) November 10, 2024 There are calls for the crucifixion — OK, that’s dramatic — the firing of Daboll. That’s understandable. Fans want their pound of flesh when a team is failing, and the national media sees an 8-19 record since the start of the 2023 season and thinks there is no way the head coach can remain beyond this season. Daboll might not survive ‘The Wreck of the Giants’ 2024 Season’. I have my issues with the decisions Daboll makes at times. I think every writer and every fan disagrees with the head coach sometimes. One of those issues, by the way, is not the third-and-1 flea flicker on Sunday. We have been snickering at Daboll all season for calling quarterback sneaks on second-and-1 or third-and-1. I wasn’t crazy about the play call, but I’m not going to be disingenuous and rip the coach for it. It should have worked. Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson were both wide open 20 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Jones received a good pitch back from Devin Singletary. Left tackle Jermaine Eluemunor could have been better on the play, but Jones had enough time. For some reason, Jones was slow to reset and prepare to throw. By the time he did all that, he was swallowed up by Carolina defensive end D.J. Wonnum. Daboll has done the best he can with the quarterback he was given, and that he has had no choice but to ride with since the Giants failed in their pre-draft pursuit of Drake Maye. If the Giants were 5-5 through 10 games, which they probably should be, would anyone be calling for Daboll’s head? Probably not. It is pretty easy to argue that the Giants would have that 5-5 record with better quarterback play. In a Week 4 20-15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Jones put up an excellent 29 of 40 for 281 yards stat line. But, he missed three deep throws and failed to get the Giants into the end zone despite engineering six drives of eight or more plays. In a Week 6 17-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals Jones led an offense that scored just one touchdown against what was the worst defense in football entering the game. This is what I wrote in giving Jones a ‘Wet Willie’ for that game: There were plays to be made against the less-than-stellar Cincinnati defense that didn’t get made. There was also one ugly, costly red zone interception on a ball Jones tried to throw away while getting hit by ex-Giant B.J. Hill that can’t happen. Jones was 22 of 41 for 205 yards with an interception. Having Malik Nabers would have helped, sure. And head coach Brian Daboll fell on his sword by taking the blame for the poor offensive showing. A lot of it, though, had to do with the quarterback. Again, the numbers didn’t look terrible. Jones, though, made a costly mistake and didn’t make enough big plays. There

Jared Goff’s stat line was rough—15-of-30 for 240 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions—but only three of those picks were graded as turnover-worthy plays. Houston’s C.J. Stroud completed 19 of 33 passes for 212 yards, with one touchdown, two interceptions, no big-time throws, and two turnover-worthy plays. Yours truly will once again join Drew Bunting and Ted Glover to talk about all of the action we saw at Everbank Stadium this afternoon, and as always there are two ways that you can join us. Lions injury update: Sam LaPorta shoulder injury not serious
Photo by Alex Slitz/Getty Images Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell indicated that Sam LaPorta’s shoulder injury doesn’t appear to be serious. Details here. Amidst the Detroit Lions’ insane comeback win against the Houston Texans, tight end Sam LaPorta suffered an injury early in the second half and did not return to the game. It was announced as a shoulder injury, but according to Lions coach Dan Campbell, they don’t believe it’s a serious injury that could hold him out for a prolonged period of time—he may not even miss the next game. “I don’t know how significant it will be, (but) it’s not something like—this is not, ‘He’s going to be out four weeks,’” Campbell said. “Maybe, he might miss this week. We’ll see. He’s got a little sprain in here (points to shoulder/neck) kinda the AC joint. “He tried to go back in and it wasn’t quite right. It didn’t quite feel right. So we’ll get it checked tomorrow, we’ll see where it’s at, see how significant it is, and just take it day-to-day.” LaPorta is a tough kid. Last year, he suffered what looked to be a pretty rough knee injury in the regular season finale, and yet he didn’t end up missing a single playoff game. But we’ll see how much the Lions try to push him this week against the 2-8 Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions’ second-year tight end was in the midst of one of his best games of 2024. He pulled in three catches for 66 yards and a touchdown against the Texans on Sunday night. For the season, LaPorta has 25 catches for 366 yards and three touchdowns.
Nick Sirianni was really proud of how Jalen Hurts bounced back after early turnovers against Cowboys
The Eagles head coach spoke after their Week 10 divisional win, and sad Jalen Hurts did a great job handling adversity. The Eagles had a huge day in Dallas, beating the Cowboys 34-6, and head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to reporters after the game about how the defense has helped give the offense a cushion. He also talked about how proud he was of Jalen Hurts to rebound after a tough first quarter and go on to have a really good game. Here’s what the head coach had to say: On the defensive performance Sirianni gave a lot of credit to the defense, and said that it was similar to the Green Bay game, with the defense giving the offense a chance to get some momentum without being behind. “I think the defense has done a really nice job. They played a great game today. Forcing that turnover after, I think after our turnover, was huge to keep it at 7-3. I just thought they started fast, they played great throughout the entire game. We tackled — I love when we tackle well. I mean, we’ve tackled really well.” The head coach went on to say that the Cowboys have a lot of offensive players who can do some damage with the ball in their hands, so the Eagles defense did a nice job playing fundamentally sound and taking the ball away. On Jalen Hurts’ performance Sirianni thought that the QB did some really nice things. He admitted that things didn’t start off the way they wanted, but pointed out that there’s something to be said about guys who can rebound and play a really good game after some issues early on. “Great job handling adversity, putting his head down and continuing to work. Again, I say it to you guys all the time, [Jalen Hurts is] a winner. He knows how to win. He knows every game isn’t going to be perfect, and I’m really proud of him and how he responded to a slow start and help lead us to a victory.” The head coach was asked if Dallas was doing anything to force Hurts to hold onto the ball a little longer than normal, but Sirianni said that the Cowboys’ defense did about what they expected, so that wasn’t really a surprise. He lauded Trevon Diggs, and said that they know Diggs will capitalize on any little mistake, whether it’s a missed landmark or late throw. “I think a little bit, [Hurts’ interception] was [Trevon Diggs] on that side, the rush was getting there. We were in second and predictable, where you had to pass, because we didn’t get the run game quite as early as we wanted to, and play the game we wanted to play. Hats off to them of how they stopped us early on, but good rebound by our players and our coaches to turn the tide in the second half.” Sirianni later said that they haven’t watched the tape yet in terms of his turnovers, but knows that the quarterback will learn from those mistakes and will move on. He’s shown that he already moved on, in the game, when he went on a roll after the first quarter, but ultimately, Sirianni is just really proud of the way Hurts bounced back and was able to have a really good game after the turnovers. The head coach did admit that on the fumble, Hurts was in the process of tucking the ball to secure it, but Micah Parsons was able to get to him at the right time. Sirianni noted that Hurts could probably tuck his elbow a little quicker, but acknowledged that’s really hard to do in the heat of the moment. Plus, Parsons is a great player who is going to make things challeging. He also talked about Hurts scrambling and then connecting with Dallas Goedert for a touchdown, and Sirianni said that they’ve put a big emphasis on the scrambling drills at practice. They work to make sure Hurts has options to the left, right, and up the middle, so the QB has different lanes to go. Other notables Sirianni gave LB Zack Baun his highest compliment, calling him a really good football player, and had a lot of praise for how the linebacker has continued to improve each week. He noted that Baun is a physical player, who is tough, and plays fundamentally sound. Jalen Carter said that they watch tape every week of turnovers throughout the league, and Sirianni explained that good teams learn from their mistakes, but great teams learn from the mistakes of others. He’s trying to put his players in position to get as many mental reps as possible, and when it comes to taking the ball away on defense, or protecting the ball on offense, they will find things to learn from whether it’s high school, college, or NFL football. Heading into a Thursday night game, Sirianni said that it’s really nice to be able to get the starters off the field in the fourth quarter to give them as much extra rest as they can. He noted they’ve been able to do that a few times this season, and those reps really add up.

Meanwhile, New York — which fell to 3-7 — averaged a measly 3.7 yards per play and suffered from multiple fourth-down mistries.
