Photo by Julio Aguilar/Getty Images Yes, there’s still football Even though the season ended for our Minnesota Vikings just a few days ago, there is still football to be played in the National Football League, as the Divisional Round of the playoffs kicks off today with a doubleheader featuring the top seeds in each conference. The action will start at 3:30 PM Central time on ABC and ESPN, as we’ll go to Arrowhead Stadium to watch the Kansas City Chiefs begin their quest for a three-peat as they host the Houston Texans. Houston knocked off the Los Angeles Chargers last week to advance in pretty impressive fashion, given that just about nobody expected them to win. The nightcap will take us to the Motor City, as the Detroit Lions will host the Washington Commanders. Washington won a thriller last week over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get here, and now hopefully they can engineer an upset this evening. Here’s how we’re picking this one, courtesy of the folks from Tallysight. Usual reminder about things being different for everyone depending on when they made their picks, and if you want the latest you can check out FanDuel. If you’re going to be watching the action today, feel free to hang out and talk about it right here. Enjoy the games, everyone!

Lions elevate 2 practice squad players for Commanders game
Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images The Detroit Lions have made two defensive additions from the practice squad for their Divisional Round game against the Washington Commanders. The Detroit Lions announced on Saturday afternoon two practice squad elevations for their Divisional Round playoff game against the Washington Commanders. Both defensive tackle Chris Smith and cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver are active from the practice squad and will revert back to the practice squad after the game. In addition to these roster moves, the Lions announced that rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw has not yet been activated from injured reserve, and therefore, he has been downgraded to OUT for Saturday night. His practice evaluation window is still open, so a return next week is possible if the Lions are still alive in the playoffs. Smith and Thomas-Oliver are both players who are getting the call-up as a result of Lions injury situations. Smith helps a depleted interior defensive line. The Lions lost Kyle Peko and Alim McNeill to season-ending injuries this season, and reserve Pat O’Connor was also injured in the Lions’ regular season finale, and declared out for this game. That leaves Detroit with just DJ Reader, Levi Onwuzurike, Brodric Martin, and Myles Adams as the only healthy options who can kick inside. Smith, who was added after going undrafted in 2023, has made five game appearances for the Lions this year, tallying two tackles and a QB hit this season. Thomas-Oliver helps Detroit’s extremely thin outside cornerback room right now. Detroit is currently without Rakestraw, Carlton Davis, Emmanuel Moseley, and Khalil Dorsey. That leaves just Terrion Arnold, Amik Robertson, and Kindle Vildor as Detroit’s three healthy cornerbacks. Thomas-Oliver was signed to the Lions’ practice squad in mid-December. A 2020 seventh-round pick by the Panthers, Thomas-Oliver has made 26 game appearances in his career, and participated in five special teams snaps for Detroit in the regular season finale.

The Divisional round of the NFL Playoffs begins on Saturday, and after a bye during the Wild Card round, both No. 1 seeds will host their first playoff games of the 2024-25 post-season. Things start with the AFC No. 4 Houston Texans traveling to Missouri to take on the AFC No. 1 Kansas City Chiefs at 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, followed by NFC No. 6 Washington Commanders taking on the NFC No. 1 Detroit Lions at Ford Field at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. While the Chiefs are coming off a bye week, the Texans needed to beat the Chargers in the Wild Card round to get to this stage. Unfortunately, they haven’t had much playoff success in Arrowhead, losing both of their previous playoff games in this venue in 2015 and 2019. Additionally, the Texans played in Kansas City in Week 16 and the Chiefs won 27-19. The winner of this game advances to the AFC Championship game which will be played on Sunday, January 26th at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Commanders at Lions Date: Saturday, January 18, 2025Time: 8 p.m. ETLocation: Ford Field in Detroit, MichiganTV: FOXAnnouncers: Kevin Burkhardt, Tom Brady, and field reporters Erin Andrews, Tom RinaldiStreaming: FOX Sports, NFL Sunday Ticket via YouTube, NFL+ PremiumBetting line via FanDuel Sportsbook: Lions -9.5 points. Detroit also had a bye last week, while Washington needed to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round. This was the Commanders’ first playoff win since 2005. The Lions and Commanders have faced each other three times in their playoff histories, with Washington winning all three back in 1982, 1991, and 1999. This will be the first time these teams have met in the post-season in Detroit and will offer the Lions another opportunity to vanquish their demons with a victory. The winner of this game advances to the NFC Championship game which will be played on Sunday, January 26th at 3 p.m. ET on FOX. Eagles and Rams roster news ahead of their playoff game
Photo by Emilee Chinn/Getty Images Divisional Round updates. The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced two roster moves ahead of their Divisional Round playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams. An overview: FB Khari Blasingame and LB Nicholas Morrow were temporarily elevated from the practice squad. Note: teams can temporarily promote practice squad players up to three times each in the regular season and an unlimited number of times in the postseason. Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis. KHARI BLASINGAME The Eagles previously elevated Blasingame for last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers. He played two offensive snaps and 10 special teams snaps. The Eagles used Ben VanSumeren as a fullback on five of their 73 offensive snaps against the Rams back in Week 12. Perhaps Blasingame will be a little more involved in this game than he’s been to this point with just four offensive snaps played over four games? NICHOLAS MORROW The Eagles re-signed Morrow earlier this week in the aftermath of Nakobe Dean suffering a season-ending knee injury that landed him on injured reserve. Morrow figures to provide depth behind Zack Baun, Oren Burks, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in addition to contributing on special teams. Morrow is wearing No. 43 after wearing No. 41 last year. COULD THE RAMS BE WITHOUT THEIR STARTING LEFT TACKLE? Sean McVay said that he expects the four Rams players who were ruled questionable on the final injury report to play in Philly. But it was curious to see Rams starting left tackle Alaric Jackson miss Friday’s practice due to a newly listed knee injury. In potentially related news, the Rams temporarily elevated depth offensive tackle A.J. Arcuri from the practice squad. Arcuri hasn’t been elevated for a game the Rams have tried to win (so, excluding Week 18) since Week 1, which Jackson missed. So, might the Rams be preparing for Jackson not to play? Or perhaps they’re anticipating he might not be able to make it through the game? Certainly something to keep an eye on. Eagles-Rams inactives will be announced 90 minutes before kickoff on Sunday at 1:30 PM Eastern.
2025 AFC Divisional Round: Chiefs vs. Texans

The Divisional Round of the playoffs will get underway on Saturday afternoon with an AFC matchup between the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs lead the all-time regular season series between these teams, 8-5, winning four of their five most-recent meetings. They last faced off just a month ago in Kansas City, with the Chiefs securing a 27-19 victory. The Texans and Chiefs are familiar with each other in the postseason, as well. Houston has lost to the Chiefs in the playoffs twice over the years, including in the AFC Divisional Round back in 2020 — Kansas City won at home, 51-31. Have the Rams relegated Cooper Kupp to a smaller role in the offense?
Photo by Brooke Sutton/Getty Images Has Cooper Kupp taken a smaller role in the Rams offense? One of the more interesting developments over the last month and a half of the season for the Los Angeles Rams has been the fall of wide receiver Cooper Kupp. Since having five receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills, Kupp has five receptions since. He has just one reception in two of those games and was held without a catch against the San Francisco 49ers. For a player that was once such a big part of the offense, he has mostly disappeared down the stretch. That’s not to say that he can’t make big plays or make important catches in the offense. He did it last week with his 29-yard catch down the sideline. On the incomplete pass that was almost a fumble, quarterback Matthew Stafford would have had Kupp wide open down the sideline with time. Cooper Kupp may be taking a lesser role in the Rams offense, but he can still work effectively on a vertical plane. Kupp came open earlier in the game on the Stafford fumble that was called back. Good protection here. Stafford’s placement allows Kupp to come back to the ball. pic.twitter.com/KihGHzE2aX — Blaine Grisak (@bgrisakTST) January 18, 2025 Still, it’s also hard to ignore the lack of Kupp’s usage in the offense and how much it has dramatically fallen in recent weeks. What was most alarming was Kupp’s snap count. Kupp played just 55 percent of the team’s offensive snaps on Monday Night against the Vikings. That was his lowest since Week 8 which was his first game back from injury. That’s going to happen with how much 12 personnel that the Rams ran. However, in that first meeting against the Vikings, Kupp still had the second-most snaps for a wide receiver in the offense and was nearly even with Puka Nacua. In the wild card matchup, Kupp was on the field for 55 percent of the team’s snaps, which was behind Demarcus Robinson’s 72 percent and Puka Nacua’s 85 percent. Kupp was the third wide receiver in the pecking order. It’s not just that Kupp’s snaps have gone down, but his overall usage as well. Kupp had a target share of 25.3 percent from Weeks 8-14 which was second behind Nacua. Since Week 15 and not counting Week 18, his target share has been 9.5 percent. His targets have continuously gone down late in the season from 15.8 percent in Week 16 to 9.4 percent in Week 17 and then 3.7 percent against the Vikings. Kupp’s designed targets have become non-existent. Using Week 1 and then Weeks 8-12 Kupp had a designed target rate of 5.8 percent to Nacua’s 5.7 percent. These are targets that come off of a designed read and those were Kupp and Nacua’s first six games together this season. Since Week 13, but excluding Week 18, Nacua has a 35 percent designed target rate to Kupp’s zero. The Rams wide receiver has almost become an afterthought in the offense. That seems crazy to say after how Kupp performed in 2021 and 2022. Even last year, the targets were much more evenly dispersed, with Kupp holding a 23.3 percent target share compared to Nacua’s 25.6 percent when both were on the field. Kupp’s utilization has also undergone a significant shift. Known for excelling in shallow areas of the field, he has always been quick and twitchy, with precise route-running skills. His ability to dominate along the sideline and underneath routes made him a tough matchup from the slot. Down the stretch, the Rams have used Kupp a lot more on a vertical plane. He has essentially become the Rams vertical, downfield threat. Early in the season, Kupp was used much more in the shallower areas of the field. Since Week 13, he’s been used on that vertical plane. Have noticed a bit of a shift recently in Cooper Kupp’s usage in the Rams offense. Look at his route chart in Week 12 vs. the Eagles vs. Week 14 vs. the Bills. Lot more short, quick-breaking routes vs. more on a vertical plane. Kupp has almost becomes Rams “deep threat”. pic.twitter.com/vjAjMvgMnM — Blaine Grisak (@bgrisakTST) January 18, 2025 From Weeks 8-12, 25.1 percent of Kupp’s routes were considered “vertically breaking”. Since Week 13, 32.1 percent of Kupp’s routes have been vertically breaking. That’s a seven percent difference which is significant. His overall routes have also gone down during that time frame going from 85.3 percent to 67.3 percent. Again, that’s a 20 percent difference which is very significant. Again, this isn’t to say that Kupp still can’t be effective. However, it may be a sign that the Rams are starting to see what many others have down the stretch. That is the fact that Kupp has taken a step back and his level has slightly fallen off. The Rams still need to find that second option behind Puka Nacua. It’s hard to see the Rams making a deep playoff run if their passing offense is Nacua and not much else. However, based on the last five weeks and emphasized in the wild card round, the Rams are no longer forcing that to be Kupp.
Marlon Humphrey looks forward to wintry Buffalo conditions
Marlon Humphrey looks forward to wintry Buffalo conditions paulbanks Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey earned both an All-Pro selection and his third Pro Bowl berth during the 2024 season. Given his injury-riddled, disappointing 2023, this season has been nothing short of a significant comeback. Humphrey and the Ravens will visit the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night for the most anticipated game of the divisional playoff weekend. It’s probably one of the most hyped-up divisional playoff games ever. It’s a matchup between two teams used to playing in cold weather, and Humphrey is excited about potentially playing in the snow. “It gets cold enough in Baltimore, so I don’t think it will be much different.” The current forecast for kickoff time is an air temperature of 17 degrees, with a 20% chance of precipitation and a humidity of 64%. Also, once that wind whips up in Highmark Stadium, during nighttime, it will feel much colder than 17 to everyone who is in attendance. If snow falls throughout this game, it will add interest and excitement to what is shaping up to be a classic. Meanwhile, an Arctic blast will hit most of the United States this weekend and last until about Thursday. Subzero wind chills could be seen as far south as Atlanta and/or Dallas. Weather alerts are going out as we speak, and we’ll all need to practice common sense to stay safe, as this front will adversely impact most of the population.
Is the NFL secretly reviewing facemask penalties?
Photo by Matthew Pearce/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images And where was this when Joe Burrow was being abused? After the Cincinnati Bengals played the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, NFL rules analyst Walt Anderson admitted that the refs missed an obvious facemask violation by Marist Liufau on quarterback Joe Burrow. Anderson went on to say that the league would “look at a lot of plays” to find “some of the things that real quickly we can help the officials with seeing.” It appeared at the time that the NFL would take steps to catch more such violations in the future. Well, the future might be now. In last Monday’s playoff game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Rams, linebacker Blake Cashman grabbed the facemask of running back Kyren Williams. But none of the refs threw a flag. Here’s what happened next, per the narration of Pro Football Talk: Then, referee John Hussey conferred with umpire Terry Killens, Jr. After their meeting, Hussey announced the penalty. On the broadcast, Joe Buck said, “We never saw a flag.” “No, and I don’t know where that came from,” ESPN rules analyst Russell Yurk said. “They definitely talked about it afterwards, and I don’t know where it came from.” Asked Buck, “Am I wrong in saying that they cannot throw a flag in essence from New York?” “Yeah, I don’t think it came from New York,” Yurk said, not answering the question directly. “I did see a flag come in late. And so I think they talked about it on the field. I don’t think they would have thrown this from New York.” This does seem a bit suspicious. If a facemask isn’t yet a reviewable violation, it isn’t technically allowed to review it. But player safety should always take priority, so this is definitely a step in the right direction. Of course, Bengals fans probably can’t help but be a little frustrated, seeing that their star QB was the most high-profile player to have his facemask grabbed in critical junctures of games. There was, of course, the violation from the Cowboys game, which, fortunately, the Bengals would still win. Refs miss a facemask penalty on Cowboys on Joe Burrow wow pic.twitter.com/F09bgoAKur — Tedd Buddwell (@TedBuddy8) December 10, 2024 But there was also this one on a huge play in a crucial loss to the Baltimore Ravens. BLATANT hand to the face/facemask on Joe Burrow. No call from the officials. How did they not see that? #Bengals pic.twitter.com/dqzAiA7mta — Joey DeBerardino (@JoeyDeBerardino) November 8, 2024 refs: “there was no facemask on the play” joe burrow: pic.twitter.com/wQxNIewvhI — Annie Agar (@AnnieAgar) December 10, 2024 And yet somehow, with an o-line that couldn’t consistently protect him and a lot of missed calls from refs, Burrow had a career year. Vikings Links: Offseason Planning Has Begun
This offseason is off to a great start. The debates are going to be fierce but great. What will and should they do at QB? When will they extend KOC and KAM? What positions will they target in free agency and then the draft? Will they trade for or away anyone? Will someone answer the dang phone? How much will KOC get in a new deal? I am thinking at least 10M per year and probably 13M sounds good.
