Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles: NFC Championship Game Discussion
Photo by Elsa/Getty Images The first half of this year’s Super Bowl matchup It’s time to start setting up the matchup for Super Bowl LIX, as we’re just minutes away from the kickoff of this year’s NFC Championship Game. We’re getting the rubber match between two teams from the NFC East, as the Philadelphia Eagles will play host to the Washington Commanders. This is the third straight home game for the Eagles, as they beat Green Bay on Super Wild Card Weekend and took down the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round to get to this spot. The Commanders beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their first playoff game and then did us all the favor of curbstomping Detroit in the Divisional playoffs last week to advance. These two teams split their regular season matchups against each other. They met in Philadelphia back in Week 11 on Thursday Night Football, with the Eagles coming out with a 26-18 victory. The rematch came in Week 16 in the nation’s capital, and the Commanders charged back from a 27-14 deficit in the final 18 minutes of play to emerge with a thrilling 36-33 victory. This game will be kicking off at 2:00 PM Central time, and the coverage will be provided by FOX affiliates around the country. Here’s how we’re picking this one, courtesy of the folks from Tallysight. As always, we remind you that the lines and numbers may be different for each selector based on when they put their picks into the system, and if you want the latest you can check in with our friends from FanDuel. NFC Championship Game: Washington Commanders @ Philadelphia Eagles Live Thread & Game Information
Photo by Scott Taetsch/Getty Images Today’s NFC Championship game showcases two NFC East teams as the Washington Commanders travel to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a bid to advance to the Super Bowl. The Eagles entered the playoffs as the second seed after clinching the NFC East with a 14-3 record. Philadelphia also secured the top seed in the NFC prior to this week due to the Detroit Lions‘ loss to the Commanders last week. Leading up to this game, Washington beat the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round, 22-10, and defeated the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round, 28-22. The Washington Commanders, the NFC East’s second-place team, secured a spot in the playoffs as a Wild Card selection with their 12-5 record. The Commanders’ record gave them the sixth overall seed in the NFC. Washington advanced to the NFC Championship game after two surprising upset victories. The Commanders defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa during the Wild Card Round, 23-20, and then overcame the NFC’s top-seeded Detroit Lions in Detroit last weekend during the Divisional Round, 45-31. The NFC Championship battle between the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles will air at 3 p.m. ET on FOX, followed by the AFC Championship match between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Commanders at Eagles Date: Sunday, January 26, 2025Time: 3 p.m. ETLocation: Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaTV: FOXAnnouncers: Kevin Burkhardt, Tom Brady, with field reporters Erin Andrews, Tom RinaldiOnline Streaming: FOX Sports, NFL Sunday Ticket via YouTube, NFL+ PremiumBetting line via FanDuel Sportsbook: Eagles -6.5 points. The Commanders and Eagles split their two regular season matchups this season. The Eagles won 26-18 in Week 11 behind a monster day from Saquon Barkley, who registered 146 yards rushing, including two rushing touchdowns in the final five minutes of the game. In Week 16, the Commanders came out on top 36-33, behind a Jayden Daniels five-touchdown passing performance, including making three in the fourth quarter and the final touchdown pass coming with just six seconds remaining in the game. As the No. 6 seed, the Commanders are playing with house money which has resulted in a relaxed style of play that has put up a lot of points in the early round of the playoffs, while the Eagles are heavy favorites but have been playing like it, dominating each of their playoff games. Bills at Chiefs Date: Sunday, January 26, 2025Time: 6:30 p.m. ETLocation: GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MissouriTV: CBSAnnouncers: Jim Nantz, Tony Romo, with field reporters Tracy Wolfson, Jay FeelyStreaming: Paramount+, NFL Sunday Ticket via YouTube, NFL+ Premium,Betting line via FanDuel Sportsbook: Chiefs -1.5 points The Bills and Chiefs faced off in Week 11 during the regular season with the Bills coming away with a 30-21 win (their fourth consecutive regular season win over the Chiefs). Josh Allen took over that game, throwing for 262 yards and rushing for 55, including a 26-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes remaining, effectively sealing the win. In their postseason histories, the Chefs have won four of their last six meetings, including the 2020 AFC Championship, as well as the 2021 and 2023 Divisional rounds of the playoffs. Amazingly, this is the Chiefs’ seventh-consecutive postseason in which they’ve reached the AFC Championship game. They’ll be looking to head to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season, hoping to three-peat. Meanwhile, Allen is in the middle of a potential MVP season, and this could be his best chance to get the Bills in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1994. Notes: Chicago Bears weirdly take credit for Lions postseason award
Kirthmon F. Dozier / USA TODAY NETWORK The Detroit Lions received some postseason honors from the PFWA—then the Bears weirdly tried to take credit for it. The Detroit Lions season may not have ended the way they wanted, but the organization still commands a ton of respect across the league and throughout the media. Case in point, Lions general manager Brad Holmes was named the 2024 Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) Executive of the Year. It’s the second straight year he’s come away with the title, and deservedly so. His ability to give the Lions a deep roster allowed them to survive as long as they did with a historic amount of injuries on the defensive side of the ball. Unfortunately, coach Dan Campbell just missed out on Coach of the Year, with Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell walking away with the honors from the PFWA. Ben Johnson also was named Assistant Coach of the Year, for his work as the Detroit Lions coordinator in 2024. Johnson helped Detroit produce the most points in the league, the most points in franchise history, and a whopping five games with 40 or more points. But that’s where things get a little weird. Johnson has since taken the Chicago Bears’ head coaching job, and for some reason, the Bears felt the need to celebrate Johnson’s accomplishment, as if it were their own. Your 2024 @PFWAwriters NFL Assistant Coach of the Year pic.twitter.com/9A0yOqHB0Q — Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) January 23, 2025 It’s a pretty embarrassing look, in my opinion. It’s one thing to celebrate an employee of yours but to post a picture of him in Bears garb when his accomplishment was during his time with the Lions. But, hey, I guess the Bears have to find creative things to celebrate these days. With Kelvin Sheppard getting a promotion to defensive coordinator, now’s a good time to revisit one of the best stories Sheppard told—about his meeting with Dan Campbell upon his hiring; I had been searching for this video from two years ago. Kelvin Sheppard talked about his journey to coaching, why he contemplated cutting off his dreads, and how Dan Campbell said don’t you dare. The words spoken then, in August 2022, and now he’s promoted to DC. Pretty cool!!! pic.twitter.com/BKX2bcKMBU — Jeanna Trotman (@JeannaTrotmanTV) January 25, 2025 More Sheppard coverage: Justin Rogers transcribed an hour-long 2023 interview with the Lions’ new defensive coordinator, with topics ranging from his transition from player to coach, and his coaching influences. Alim McNeill dropped a new song this week entitled, “STOP HATIN’” New single. https://t.co/Jb8BG4oBsp — Alim McNeill (@AlimMcneill) January 24, 2025 Dan Campbell is up for Coach of the Year and both former Lions coordinators are up for Assistant Coach of the Year. But somehow, Kerby Joseph isn’t one of the finalists for Defensive Player of the Year. Cam Jurgens active but reportedly won’t start in Eagles-Commanders NFC Championship Game
Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images Who’s in and who’s out for the NFCCG. The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced the inactives list for their NFC Championship Game matchup against the Washington Commanders. The following Eagles players WILL NOT PLAY: Tanner McKee, Nick Gates, Darian Kinnard, Trevor Keegan, Ainias Smith, Eli Ricks, and Lewis Cine. Cam Jurgens is ACTIVE despite a pregame report that he is “unable to go.” It seems possible that Jurgens might only be active to play in an emergency scenario. Dealing with a back injury, he didn’t seem to fare well in pregame warmups. Cam Jurgens is active for this game but expect Landon Dickerson to start at center. But it doesn’t mean he’s starting today. https://t.co/ZyU5cOQpJP — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 26, 2025 If Jurgens indeed isn’t starting, Landon Dickerson will start at center in his place with Tyler Steen getting the nod at left guard. Under the NFL’s emergency third quarterback rule, McKee is only allowed to play if both Jalen Hurts AND Kenny Pickett leave the game for good. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) By Mason Cameron Posted Jan 26, 2025 10:31 am EST There’s one final hurdle on the road to Super Bowl 59. The conference championships are here, promising high-stakes drama and unforgettable matchups. Whether it’s star quarterbacks squaring off, underdog teams aiming to pull off stunning upsets, or key betting angles to uncover, we’ve got everything you need to know heading into the action. Click below to jump to a game: Washington Commanders @ Philadelphia Eagles (-6) [Total: 47.5] Storyline of the Game: This NFC East rubber match plays out on the conference’s biggest stage The first meeting between these two franchises in Week 11 took place at The Linc, where the Eagles overcame a 10-6 deficit heading into the fourth quarter to secure the win. Saquon Barkley delivered a heroic final frame, rushing six times for 76 yards and two touchdowns to seal the victory. The Commanders flipped the script when the series shifted to Washington in Week 16. Despite falling behind 14-0 early, they mounted a dramatic comeback behind Jayden Daniels. The rookie quarterback threw for 139 yards and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning score with under 10 seconds remaining, in a wild game that featured six turnovers by Washington. That Week 16 matchup, however, came with a significant caveat: Jalen Hurts was knocked out in the first quarter, forcing Kenny Pickett to step in. This raises the question of whether the Commanders can replicate their success against a fully healthy Eagles squad and secure another postseason win in a hostile environment. These two storied franchises haven’t crossed paths in the playoffs since 1991, but if their 2024 matchups are any indication, this final showdown between bitter NFC East rivals promises to be the most intense yet. Matchups to Watch: Commanders QB Jayden Daniels vs. Eagles LB Zack Baun Jayden Daniels, the frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year, has delivered a historic 2024 campaign, earning a 90.5 overall grade — the second-highest ever by a rookie quarterback in the PFF era (since 2006). Daniels has continued to shine in the playoffs, leading all passers in the divisional round with an 83.6 passing grade against the Lions. Defensively, the Eagles are anchored by Zack Baun, the NFL’s highest-graded linebacker (90.2) in 2024. Baun’s elite coverage instincts and anticipation earned him a league-best 91.4 coverage grade, with five forced turnovers in coverage this season. That included a crucial screen-turned-fumble the last time these teams clashed in Week 16. Betting trends A late Rams touchdown in the divisional round snatched a 7-point cover from the Eagles, dropping their ATS record at home this season to 5-5. However, Philadelphia has hosted six of their last eight games since December, covering in four of those contests (4-2 ATS). Winning outright as the dog in each of their playoff matchups marks Washington’s fourth straight-up win as the road dog this season and a 66.7% cover rate, tying them for the league lead in both. With a 5-2-1 ATS record when gifted points this season, PFF’s betting model shows a 1.2% PFF edge leaning towards the Commanders at +6. Best Bet: RB Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles — over 24.5 carries (-125) The ever-dynamic Saquon Barkley made headlines this week as DraftKings opened his rushing yardage line at an eye-popping 130.5 yards—the highest total ever posted by the sportsbook. While that number may seem lofty, it’s well within reach for Barkley, who has racked up 296 rushing yards against Washington this season. However, targeting his volume may present a more secure angle. Barkley has surpassed this rushing attempts line in every game against the Commanders this season, as well as in each of his last four outings, accumulating over 110 carries during that stretch. Philly’s commitment to the ground game has been central to their success, as they stand as the only team in the NFL with a run play percentage exceeding 50% this year. Additional News Eagles Injury Update: Center Cam Jurgens (back) returned to practice in limited fashion on Friday but remains questionable for the NFC Championship. Commanders Injury Report: Defensive lineman Daron Payne (knee/finger) is listed as questionable, while guard Sam Cosmi (knee) has been ruled out. Award Honors: Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been named the PFWA Rookie of the Year. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley earned PFWA Offensive Player of the Year honors. AP NFL Award Finalists: Commanders nominees include quarterback Jayden Daniels (Offensive Rookie of the Year) and head coach Dan Quinn (Coach of the Year). Eagles nominees include running back Saquon Barkley (Most Valuable Player & Offensive Player of the Year), linebacker Zack Baun (Defensive Player of the Year), cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell (Defensive Rookie of the Year) and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio (Assistant Coach of the Year). NFC Championship Ceremony: Former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles will serve as the honorary captain for the NFC Championship Game. BUFFALO BILLS @ KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (-2) [Total: 48.5] Storyline of the Game: Patrick Mahomes vs. Josh Allen The ninth meeting between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen is set to add another thrilling chapter to their storied rivalry. The two quarterbacks hold a 4-4 record in head-to-head matchups, though Allen’s success has primarily come in the regular season. The postseason, however, tells a different story, with Mahomes and the Chiefs holding a 3-0 advantage, including a victory in the 2020 AFC Championship game. Despite the playoff disparity, Allen has had his moments in this rivalry, particularly at Arrowhead Stadium. He has won three of his five career games in Kansas City, posting an impressive 90.3 overall grade
