Survey results: Giants fans don’t like team’s lack of trade deadline movement

Fans think the Giants should have made a deal at the deadline

Speculation abounded around what the New York Giants would do at the trade deadline. In particular, it was strongly anticipated that the Giants would trade edge defender Azeez Ojulari, wide receiver Darius Slayton, or both.

The argument to trade either player is that both are on expiring contracts and the Giants may not re-sign them. Trading them would guarantee a return where they may otherwise leave for nothing, which is what happened with Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney.

However, the trade deadline for the 2024 season came and went, and the Giants didn’t make any deals.

So this week we asked you, the Big Blue View Community, what you thought of the Giants’ lack of movement at the deadline. As it turned out, less than 40% of the community is happy that the Giants didn’t make a move.

The desire for the Giants to make a move at the trade deadline could have been influenced by all the speculation that they could, or would, make a move. Some fans had unrealistic returns in mind, but memories of letting players like Barkley and McKinney go for a minimal return — a single fourth-round pick a year later — likely still stings.

There’s also the reality that quite a few fans are simply ready to turn the page.

The Giants currently hold a 2-7 record and will go into their bye week with either a 3-7 or 2-8 record. Even if the Giants win this week, it’s more likely that this is another year that’s effectively over before Thanksgiving.

That’s reflected in the weekly fan confidence poll, which has dipped yet again.

Just 31% of fans believe the team is headed in the right direction following their Week 9 loss to the Washington Commanders. That’s down from the 36 percent of fans who are confident in the team following their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8.

Overall, while there was a lot of noise in fan confidence on a weekly basis, there was a general upward trend (on average) until the Giants were trounced by the Eagles in Week 7.

Giants fans want to have confidence in their team — if not that they’ll win every week, but at least that they’re building towards being consistently competitive. However their tendency to find ways to lose, or just be flat out-played, seems to be corroding that confidence. And perhaps it’s driving a desire for a new direction, and if winning while reloading hasn’t worked maybe the team needs to embrace a full rebuild.
