New York Giants news for Wednesday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Other Giant observations

Notebook: 2024 rookie class has ‘right mindset’ | Giants.com

Tyrone Tracy and the other five members of the Giants’ 2024 draft class gathered with coach Brian Daboll earlier this season. The message was that the neophyte pros were ready to contribute vitally, consistently, and immediately.

“All the rookies got together and (said), ‘We can be the motor for this season,'” Tracy said today. “It doesn’t have to be a vet guy making plays. It doesn’t have to be someone who was here last year making plays. It can be us. We can be the ones out there making big plays and making this team go.”

Has Giants draft class hit rookie wall? After fast start, mistakes becoming more prevalent | The Athletic

The Giants are leaning heavily on rookies this season. That should be good for the future. It won’t always be good for the present.

The Giants’ rookie class has been a bright spot for much of the season, but there have been some growing pains recently. Sunday’s game was mostly forgettable for the group.

Ranking the best NFL rookies after Week 9 | PFF

8. WR Malik Nabers PFF Grade: 81.3 Nabers’ 82.1 PFF receiving grade this season ranks 15th among all wide receivers, showcasing his immediate impact in the NFL. He’s averaged 2.13 yards per route run, tied for 21st at the position.

10. CB Andru Phillips PFF Grade: 79.2 After struggling against the Steelers last week, Phillips returned to form with an impressive performance this past week. He allowed five receptions on five targets, but they totaled only 45 yards in the loss to the Commanders.

This might be Daniel Jones’ last Giants stand | New York Post

But the schedule dictates that Jones might be making his last stand Sunday. If the Giants — who are favored for the first time in the last 25 games — beat the Panthers, Jones should be able to prolong his time as the starter under the common “gives us the best chance to win” justification.

It would feel wrong to bench Jones off of a victory. And then it would feel difficult to bench Jones during a short week of preparation before a nationally televised Thanksgiving game against the Cowboys to end November.

If the Giants lose to the Panthers with Jones making the 69th start of his six-year career, however, Daboll can mull a quarterback change during the bye or use the extra time to prepare Drew Lock to play Nov. 24 against the Buccaneers.

2025 NFL draft order projections: Panthers, Patriots at top | ESPN.com

Let’s take a look at the projected first-round draft order for all 32 teams using ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) by projecting the draft order by simulating the remainder of the season 20,000 times. Game probabilities are based largely on the model’s ratings for individual teams in addition to game locations. The order is based on the records the model believes the teams will have after 17 games and each team’s average draft position in the simulations.

4. New York Giants (2-7). Average draft position: 6.4 (last week 6.6). FPI chance to earn No. 1 pick: 7.2% (5.0%). FPI chance to earn top-five pick: 46.5% (46.7%). FPI chance to earn top-10 pick: 85.2% (83.4%)

Two NFL head coaches have already been fired this season. Who else might be on the hot seat? | The Athletic

Brian Daboll, New York Giants (2-7). Team owner John Mara said last month that he remains committed to Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, but as Daniel Jones’ ineptitude continues and as the losses continue to mount, it’s hard to envision him sticking with that stance. Especially with running back Saquon Barkley (the one that got away) delivering jaw-dropping highlights just down the road with the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL Midseason Head Coach Hot Seat Tiers | The Ringer

Standing Quietly in the Corner Hoping No One Notices Them: Brian Daboll, New York Giants. Daboll kept his job despite a disappointing 2023 season and a conflict with former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. In some ways, he’s doing a decent job attempting to put together an offense in which Daniel Jones does not ever need to throw the ball. But the Giants look like a contender for the first pick in next year’s draft, and I’m not sure there’s enough evidence that Daboll (and perhaps general manager Joe Shoen) will be around to make that pick.

PFF’s Mock Draft Simulator: Most-picked 2025 NFL Draft prospects for every team | PFF

New York Giants: QB Cam Ward, Miami (19.7%) . In his return from a torn ACL, Daniel Jones has still succumbed to the same mistakes we’ve come to expect. His 66.1 overall grade ranks 25th among qualifying quarterbacks, and his 2.0% big-time throw rate is tied for fifth-lowest. The Giants should seek a certifiable upgrade at quarterback to replace Jones in the long term, and Ward would do just that — if he fell to the 10th pick, which Big Blue currently holds.

This week’s opponent

Panthers trade Jonathan Mingo to Dallas | Panthers.com

The Panthers traded second year receiver Jonathan Mingo and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys. In return, the Panthers will receive the Cowboys fourth round pick for 2025. Mingo was drafted in the second round (No. 39 overall) in the 2023 NFL draft. He appeared in 24 games over the past season and a half, pulling in 55 receptions (on 111 targets) for 539 yards.

With the trade, the Panthers now have eight picks in the first five rounds of the 2025 draft. They now have a pick in each of the first three rounds, two fourths, three fifths, and one seventh-rounder.

NFL Week 9: Biggest questions, takeaways for every game | ESPN.com

Most surprising performance: Red zone defense. Carolina allowed red zone touchdowns 71.4% of the time coming into the day. That was trimmed to 50%, which isn’t great but is a huge improvement from the 94% in the first five games of the year. Forcing two red zone field goals early kept this one close enough to win.
