Giants continue to flounder at home

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants continued to play miserably on home on Sunday, falling to the Washington Commanders 27-22 at MetLife Stadium. The Giants are now 0-5 at home, 2-7 overall, and have lost four straight games.

The Commanders lead the NFC East with a 7-2 record.

The Giants trailed 21-7 at halftime. At that point, they had 142 yards rushing on 21 carries (6.8 yards per carry). Quarterback Daniel Jones, though, was just 4 of 6 for 0 yards with a touchdown pass, a fumble, and a quarterback rating of a stunning 109.7. Jones did throw a touchdown pass of 2 yards to Chris Manhertz, his first at MetLife Stadium since Jan. 1 of 2023.

The Giants had a potentially momentum shifting third-quarter touchdown wiped off the board. Jones hit Wan’Dale Robinson for a 3-yard score on fourth-and-1, but Darius Slayton was called for a questionable offensive pass interference penalty. Jude McAtamney hit a 31-yard field goal, the first of his NFL career, to make the score 21-10 with 5:27 left in the quarter. That is three straight games in which the Giants have had a touchdown negated by penalty.

The Giants got within 24-16 with 9:25 left in the game when Jones ran for a 2-yard score after hitting Slayton on a 22-yard pass. A 2-point conversion failed.

After a Commanders field goa, a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Theo Johnson pulled the Giants within 27-22 with 2:46 to play. The Giants again failed on a 2-point conversion. The Commanders then ran out the clock.

Stats

  • Jones completed 20 of 26 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran seven times for 54 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown.
  • Nabers caught nine passes for 59 yards. He became the second player in NFL history to have at least 50 catches in his first seven games.
  • Tyrone Tracy led the Giants with 16 carries for 66 yards. The Giants ran for 164 total yards on 31 carries, averaging 5.3 yards per rush.
  • The Giants held the ball for 32:00 to 28:00 for the Commanders.
  • Micah McFadden led the Giants with 11 tackles.
  • Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels was 15 of 22 for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

Injuries

  • Darius Slayton and Ihmir Smith-Marsette were being evaluated for concussions in the final minutes of the game.
