Eagles News: Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley talk about meeting Barack Obama

Eagles News: Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley talk about meeting Barack Obama

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 11/1/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

NFL star Jalen Hurts prohibited from golfing with Barack Obama due to $255 million contract clause – SB Nation
Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts joined former President Barack Obama, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, and Eagles Running Back Saquon Barkley at Merion Golf Club earlier this week. Merion has hosted the U.S. Open on five occasions, with Ben Hogan famously winning in 1953 and Lee Trevino taking home his second major title in 1971. The Philadelphia-area course most recently hosted the U.S. Open in 2013, when Justin Rose won his only major title. The course is also picturesque and challenges anyone who plays it. So that, coupled with its history, makes Merion a bucket-list course that every golfer dreams of playing. Except Hurts could not play. A clause in his contract prevents him from playing golf, which Hurts revealed in a Wednesday press conference.

Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts recall their golf course outing with former President Barack Obama: ‘That was cool’ – Inquirer
It was a dream experience for Barkley and for Jalen Hurts. It was Jeffrey Lurie and Obama vs. Barkley and one of Obama’s friends. Hurts, who doesn’t golf — more on that later — walked along with the group. Barkley called it “probably one of the coolest experiences I’ve had in my life.” Hurts, who last year listed Obama as one of his six dream guests at a hypothetical dinner part, said Obama was “kind of like an uncle figure out there.” Barkley’s team didn’t win, he said. It’s football season for Barkley, not golf. “If you’re not focused on golf right now and one of your first rounds is there, it’s a tough place,” Barkley said of Merion.

Eagles Film Review: Takeaways from the Bengals game – BGN
The big takeaway this week was obviously Jalen Hurts’s play. I’ve been accused of being too positive in my defense of Hurts this year, but I think people have gone a little bit over the top with their criticism of him. He’s in a new scheme, and it will always take time. This was his best game of the season by a distance. Watching this deep touchdown live to DeVonta Smith was incredible. You could see Smith running deep, and Hurts needed protection to hold up. This is a perfect throw and catch. I was so happy for Smith, who bounced back after a tough week 7. I’ll throw a little controversial statement out there, but I watched DeVonta Smith on Sunday and Malik Nabers on Monday, and I was more impressed with Smith. I think we forget how good he is because AJ Brown is absurd.

Eagles-Jaguars preview: Five things to watch – PhillyVoice
The Jaguars have been atrocious against the pass so far this season. The thing that stands out is that they are getting some particularly awful play from their safeties. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles should be able to push the ball down the field against this team. We’ll see.

Former Eagles coach Pederson helped usher Sirianni in as Philly coach – ESPN
“I think from the outside looking in, I think he’s handled it well. My advice is you’ve just got to keep going every single day, man. You’ve just got to keep head down, plowing forward, just do your job, get your team ready to go for another game,” said Pederson, who finds himself fighting for his job with the Jaguars at 2-6. Added Vermeil: “Well I think Nick goes through in this city a little more intensely what most NFL coaches go through: they love you when you win and they don’t like you when you lose. And I think Nick, like all of us, including Dick Vermeil, have made mistakes from time to time in what he said or what he did and it gets evaluated either very positively or very negatively. Sometimes it misleads the true value of the good you are doing. Whenever you have a winning record in the NFL believe me, you’re doing a good job.”

Eagles coordinator’s demanding style makes his players ‘mentally’ strong: ‘Sometimes you hate it’ – NJ.com
“(Vic) holds us accountable,” Eagles linebacker Zack Baun told NJ Advance Media. “There is a high standard with Vic. Obviously, we have high standards for ourselves. So that marriage right there is crucial.” Each day, Fangio watches practice and game film with his players to corrects their mistakes. He doesn’t yell or scream to get his point across, but he does provide harsh feedback. “(Vic) is here to correct you. Sometimes you hate it. Sometimes you like it,” Eagles safety Reed Blankenship said. “But at the end of the day, that’s football. You just got to have a tough shell and learn how to be mentally strong through that and just apply it through the next week.”

How Zach Baun and Nakobe Dean’s friendship off the field helps them on the field – NBCSP
His first day in Philly after signing with the Eagles, Zach Baun drove over to the NovaCare Complex to see his new workplace, and the first person he ran into was Nakobe Dean. “He was hanging out in the locker room,” Baun recalled. “First dude I met on the team. So he just said to me, ‘Let’s get to work.’ And it just went on from there.” That was back in March, and there were huge question marks around both guys. Kind of like the linebacker position most years around here. Baun had never played off-ball linebacker, other than a handful of snaps with the Saints. And Dean was going into Year 3 having barely played as a rookie and missing most of last year with foot injuries. So both got to work not just figuring out their roles and learning what new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wanted out of them but learning to work together. Because you can have two gifted linebackers, but if they’re not locked into each other, it won’t work.

Week 9 NFL picks: Lions or Packers in NFC North battle? Will Ravens bounce back against Broncos? – NFL.com
Why Gennaro picked the Eagles: Because Doug Pederson’s former team is better than Doug Pederson’s current team. That’s the simple answer. A slightly more nuanced explanation: I just don’t see the Jaguars stopping the Eagles. Eight weeks into the season, Jacksonville ranks dead last in defensive DVOA. The Jaguars aren’t great against the run, having allowed 150-plus rushing yards in two of the past three weeks, but they’re certifiably awful against the pass. Opposing quarterbacks are completing 70.4 percent of throws at 8.1 yards per attempt vs. Ryan Nielsen’s unit, churning out a sparkling 111.8 passer rating. Jacksonville has given up an NFL-high 17 touchdown passes while snagging just two interceptions. Now the Jaguars’ disastrous defense faces an Eagles offense that has rounded into form since Nick Sirianni rounded off his dome. OK, maybe the current three-game win streak is more tied to the return of star receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but whatever the case, Philly’s attack is cooking. Saquon Barkley has been electric all season, averaging a robust 5.9 yards per carry, while Jalen Hurts recently traded out turnovers (seven in the first four games) for touchdowns (nine total in the last three games). Long story short: Philly’s poised to play the role of unstoppable force against Jacksonville’s highly movable object.

DeVonta Smith Mic’d Up in HUGE WIN over the Bengals – PE.com
How did DeVonta Smith react to his go-ahead touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Bengals? He was Mic’d Up for the occasion. You’ll have a greater appreciation for Smitty’s game and tenacious energy after watching this.

Jaguars vs Eagles: Three matchups to watch – Big Cat Country
Over the past four weeks, Jarrian Jones has grown into an integral part of the Jaguars’ defense. In that timespan, the former Florida State corner has three forced completions, a PFF rating of 85.6 (good enough for fourth in the league), and registered THAT impressive interception of Jordan Love against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The situation in the Jaguars’ secondary has been pretty fluid all season, but the snap counts don’t lie – Jones has started to make the nickel corner job his own, with Darnell Savage reverting to a more traditional safety role. Last weekend, Jones was on the field for 58 snaps – or 86% of the time. He also saw some time on the outside as Ronald Darby went out with a hip injury. No rookie allowed a lower QB rating than Jones in Week 8 (20.8) – and his rapid growth means we should see a lot of him against the Eagles on Sunday. Much like the Jaguars’ secondary, the Eagles offense constantly move their weapons around. That said, it’s clear that offensive coordinator Kellen Moore prefers to line Devonta Smith up in the slot where he can, which makes for an intriguing matchup this weekend. The ‘Slim Reaper’ had his best performance of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday, making six grabs for 85 yards and a touchdown. A savvy route-runner, Smith will offer Jones perhaps his biggest challenge of his young career to date.

As the midpoint of the season arrives, it’s time to talk seriously about Jayden Daniels as the league MVP – Hogs Haven
While Jared Goff led the voting, Washington’s rookie phenom, quarterback Jayden Daniels, polled second, just 3 percentage points behind the Lions signal caller. Traditionally, rookies are not considered contenders for the prestigious MVP award, so the seemingly serious consideration given to Daniels, even though he isn’t leading the poll, is remarkable. Typically, the Offensive or Defensive Rookie of the Year is perceived as the “MVP award for rookies”. In fact, the only player to have ever won both OROY and league MVP is Jim Brown, who was the recipient of both post-season awards at the end of the 1957 season. If Jayden Daniels were able to do the same, he would be the only player in NFL history to have ever equaled Brown’s feat.

Cowboys’ injury report: DaRon Bland, Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs DNP – Blogging The Boys
Despite being activated, Bland did not practice (foot) for a second consecutive day. Also not practicing was Micah Parsons as his ankle injury lingers on, as well as Trevon Diggs (calf). Parsons has been working in the rehab group but hasn’t been engaged into the team portion of practice yet. Mike McCarthy has said that he feels Parsons is unlikely to play versus Atlanta. As for those who were limited, Zack Martin (shoulder) returned to practice after sitting out yesterday along with Linval Joseph (back). Caelen Carson (shoulder) practiced fully on Thursday, marking his second straight day with such a designation.

Giants trade deadline 2024: Potential suitors for edge defender Azeez Ojulari – Big Blue View
New York Giants edge defender Azeez Ojulari has taken advantage of Kayvon Thibodeaux’s absence to remind both the Giants and the NFL at large that he can be a difference-making pass rusher. Ojulari has five sacks in the three games since and his 6.0 sacks on the season has him tied for 10th in the league. With the NFL trade deadline looming on Tuesday, Nov. 5, there are several potential suitors for Ojulari’s services. Draft Network lists the Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens, and San Francisco 49ers as potential suitors for Ojulari’s services.
