Your open thread for Sunday Night
We have a classic matchup for Sunday Night Football this week, as the San Francisco 49ers host the Dallas Cowboys.
Neither of these teams are where they expected to be half way through the season. Where both teams expected to be competing for division championships, both are clinging to life after seven games. The Cowboys are sitting at 3-3 on the season, while the 49ers are under .500 at 3-4. Both teams have been hit hard by injury, with Dallas down three of their best defenders, while the 49ers could be without three of their best offensive weapons.
And yet, FanDuel sportsbook favors the 49ers to win. They have San Francisco as 5.5-point favorites at home against the Cowboys.
Chris’ pick: I’m going “homer” on this one and picking the 49ers.
I’m not sure how they win, given the fact that they’re without Brandin Ayuck and Christian McCaffrey, and could be without Deebo Samuel. Perhaps this is the Ricky Pearsall breakout game, or perhaps George Kittle feasts on the Dallas linebackers.
The good news for the 49ers, and my rationalization for picking them (apart from not wanting to pick Dallas to win) is that while their offense has been ravaged by injury, their defense looks healthy. The Cowboys, on the other hand, will be without three of their best defenders in Micah Parsons, Demarcus Lawrence, and DeRon Bland — and Eric Kendricks is questionable as well. Come down to it, I trust Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan to manufacture offense against a depleted Cowboys’ defense more than I trust a relatively limited Dallas offense against the 49ers.
