5 Questions with the Enemy: Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation

We sit down with one of the head honchos at SB Nation’s Philadelphia Eagles site to get the lay of the land for an intriguing matchup being teed up for the Bengals on Sunday.

The Cincinnati Bengals have an exciting inter-conference matchup this Sunday as they seek their first home win of the 2024 season against the Eagles. They’ll look to do so as narrow 1.5-point favorites, according to FanDuel.

To get the lay of the land of what’s going on in Philly, we tapped the knowledge of Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation.

1.) AC: What’s the feeling around the Eagles right now? It seems as if the late-season disappointment from 2023 has trickled into this year, even though they’re 4-2. Have things turned around for their coach and quarterback, who have come under scrutiny?

BG: “Eagles fans are feeling more encouraged after the team’s second straight win and their first by more than one score in nearly a year. It’s relieving to actually be able to witness a victory that doesn’t feel so excruciating.

But beating the Browns and Giants (the same two teams that the Bengals last played as well) hardly has everyone truly believing in the Eagles’ ceiling as a championship contender.

Questions remain about Nick Sirianni’s ability to press the right buttons and give his team an edge. He’s had issues with game management, and he lacked answers when it comes to starting fast on offense. The Eagles are the only team in the NFL not to score a first-quarter point this season. They haven’t scored during the first quarter in eight straight games now.

Jalen Hurts is coming off his second straight game where he didn’t turn the ball over, which is good to see after opening the season with seven giveaways through the first four weeks. But the Eagles’ passing game isn’t very cohesive and dependable right now. Hurts didn’t appear to be seeing the field well in Week 7. Holding onto the ball too long meant missing some throws that were there to be made and taking sacks that could’ve been avoided if the ball had come out sooner.

In order to beat the Bengals, the Eagles probably need Sirianni and Hurts to be sharper than they’ve been.”

2.) AC: What do you feel is the most beneficial positional matchup this week for the Eagles?

BG: “If Orlando Brown can’t play, I think an Eagles pass rush that seems to be coming alive could especially take advantage of the Bengals’ offensive line. But it seems like Brown might have a shot to suit up after being limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Even so, I’m interested to see if Philly’s defense can build on their performances against the Browns and Bengals where they combined for 13 sacks, 14 TFLs, and 21 quarterback hits. I noticed Pro Football Focus has the Bengals’ offensive line currently ranked as the sixth-worst blocking unit in the NFL.

Also interested to see how the Bengals go about defending Saquon Barkley. The Bengals rank tied for the fourth-best run defense in terms of opponent yards per rush attempt, but Barkley will test this Cincy defense that allowed Derrick Henry to log 15 carries for 92 yards earlier this season.”

3.) Give us a player on offense and defense who we may not be familiar with, but may have an impact in this game.

BG: “Offense: You are actually familiar with him as a former Bengal, but I’ll say it’s Fred Johnson. He’s starting at left tackle in place of Jordan Mailata, who’s on injured reserve. Johnson has made some really nice contributions as a run blocker, but he’s been up and down in pass protection. I’m really concerned about him going up against an elite edge rusher in Trey Hendrickson.

One would think the Eagles would try to give Fred Johnson some help, but offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland typically doesn’t go that route with his tackles, instead leaving them 1-on-1 at a higher rate than the rest of the league. We’ll see if he adjusts for this matchup. (Honorable mention on offense: linebacker Ben VanSumeren, who’s been seeing some snaps at fullback. He had some good lead blocks on Saquon runs last week.)

Defense: Not exactly a low-profile guy for a first-round pick (I’m really not following the rules of this question, am I?), but I’ll say Quinyon Mitchell. The rookie cornerback has only allowed a 69.3 passer rating when targeted this season, according to Pro Football Reference. He’s come close to intercepting a pass in almost every game this season.

Feels like only a matter of time until he finally catches the ball to make a really big play. Mitchell is facing his biggest test yet in going up against the Bengals’ impressive receiving trio. He might be due for some rookie struggles at some point, but no one would be surprised if he rises to the challenge and shines once again.”

4.) AC: Do you think a potential win would more likely come from the legs of Hurts and Saquon Barkley or through Hurts’ arm and his quality wideouts?

BG: “The former. The Eagles have really leaned into their running game coming out of their Week 5 bye. And it’s hard to blame them with how good Barkley has looked. He’s a big play waiting to happen.

The Eagles are eventually going to have to get their passing game clicking better than it is right now. They’re not going to be able to regularly win with Hurts only attempting 14 passes like he did against the Giants. They’re eventually going to need more passing volume. But they might not need it right now, especially if they can establish a lead and play from ahead in this one.”

5.) AC: Do you have a prediction for this one?

BG: “I do power rankings for Bleeding Green Nation each week. Even when the Bengals dropped to 1-4, I still had them ranked at 14th. Here’s what I wrote at the time:

“You might be wondering why I’m moving the 1-4 Bengals up after losing. The answer: they’re better than their record indicates. Don’t be surprised if they rattle off four straight wins with at NYG, at CLE, vs. PHI, and vs. LVR up next.”

I believe the Bengals are better than their record indicates. The underlying metrics indicate as much; Cincy ranks 12th in DVOA and 16th in point differential.

And so I like the Bengals to win this game. I don’t see them dropping to 0-4 at home, especially when the Eagles have typically struggled in Cincy. Bengals 28, Eagles 24.”
