The Eagles are 4-2 and very much in the race for the top spot in the NFC East. This week is a big test as they head to Cincinnati to take on a hot Bengals team. Here is what I am looking for from the Eagles rookies.
This is a huge test for the first year cornerbacks
Since 2021, the Bengals have had one of the most potent, dangerous passing games in the NFL. Joe Burrow’s connection with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins is as deadly as any quarterback-receiver combo in the country. This year has been no different with Joe Burrow having thrown 14 touchdowns to only two interceptions through seven games while Higgins and Chase are both on pace for 1,000 yard seasons. These three will be a massive challenge for the Eagles defense, namely Philly’s rookie cornerbacks.
Quinyon Mitchell has already seen some great receivers this season: Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Malik Nabers, Drake London … but none quite match what Ja’Marr Chase brings to the table. Chase’s combination of speed, route-running savvy, dominance at the catch point, and ability to pick up yards after the catch makes him a pain to defend at every phase of the play. Anytime he lines up across from Quinyon Mitchell, the rookie will have to be perfect to prevent a big play from happening.
If/when Mitchell faces Higgins, it will be about dealing with the 6’4” receiver’s physical style. A four quarter battle is in store for the impressive rookie.
For Cooper DeJean, the chances he sees the star duo is much lower. Ja’Marr Chase has played about 100 snaps in the slot this season while Higgins has played half that. That being said, DeJean will still be integral to limiting the Bengals short passing game. Joe Burrow is fantastic attacking the short and intermediate areas of the field. Taking that aspect away will give the Eagles pass rush a chance to feast on a vulnerable offensive line. DeJean has had a great start to his young career and this is a game where he can really, really help the Eagles win a premier game.
