Despite struggles, Mara expresses confidence in GM, head coach
Even though 2024 is shaping up as another disappointing season for the New York Giants, it doesn’t sound like co-owner John Mara will give unhappy fans their pound of flesh by firing head coach Brian Daboll, GM Joe Schoen, or both.
At a screening of the NFL Films piece, ‘The Duke,’ about his father, Wellington Mara, John Mara told Judy Battista of NFL Network that he does not anticipate making front office or coaching changes after the season.
John Mara said he does not anticipate making changes after the season. Part of reason he is committed to Joe Schoen & Brian Daboll — he still has confidence in them. Thinks he has not been patient enough in recent years.

In the post-Tom Coughlin years, Daboll is the first coach to last more than two seasons. Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, and Joe Judge all received a quick hook from ownership.
Schoen and Daboll were brought in together in 2022. The Giants went 9-7-1 and won a playoff game that year. They were 6-11 a year ago, and this year is off to a start indicating a similar finish is likely in store.
It is understandable that many consider Daboll’s seat to be warm, and perhaps Schoen’s, as well.
Still, Mara and the Giants crave stability. Wellington Mara was patient and loyal, perhaps too much so. John Mara knows that if the Giants are going to get out of this cycle of losing they have been in since they won the 2011 Super Bowl more patience than he has displayed might be necessary.
There is no doubt that Schoen and Daboll, first-timers in their respective roles, have made some mistakes. Perhaps it is because they still have not solved the quarterback situation, but even though it is Year 3 it still seems like they are the beginning of a build.
It seems like Mara is inclined to give them more time to finish what they have started.
Mara, per Battista’s reporting, refused to discuss quarterback Daniel Jones.
