The Detroit Lions released their Week 8 initial injury report ahead of their upcoming matchup with the Tennessee Titans.
The Detroit Lions are back home in Week 8, as they prepare to host their first AFC opponent of the season, the Tennessee Titans.
After two weeks on the road, the Lions used Wednesday as a recovery day, allowing several offensive and defensive linemen a day off for rest, while also taking it slow with players who were dealing with injuries.
Let’s take a look at Wednesday’s injury report and get you up to date with what we know. Note that any changes from last week’s report will be bolded.
Injured reserve, Non-Football injury list
- G Christian Mahogany (Illness, mono) — NFI, evaluation clock started: 6 days remain
- DT Brodric Martin (knee) — injured reserve, eligible to return at any time
- DL John Cominsky (MCL) — injured reserve, could return late in the season
- CB Emmanuel Moseley (pec) — injured reserve, expected to return late in the season
- S Ifeatu Melifonwu (ankle) — injured reserve, eligible to return in Week 9
After being spotted on the Lions’ sideline in Minnesota, coach Dan Campbell was asked for an update on Emmanuel Moseley, who is eligible to return to practice at any time but was thought to be out for the majority, if not all, of the season.
“Yeah, there is (still a chance he returns this year), and that was really the first week he’s traveled with us,” Campbell said.” He wanted to go, and we were all for it. I can’t tell you how close, but yeah, we’re going to get him back. It’s just a matter of, when is that? He’s doing pretty good. He’s doing pretty good, he’s really progressed nicely and he’s healed up well. And so, he’s doing good.”
No practice
- LT Taylor Decker (rest)
- LG Graham Glasgow (rest)
- C Frank Ragnow (rest)
- DL Levi Onwuzurike (rest)
- DL Josh Paschal (illness) — New to the injury report
Decker, Glasgow, Ragnow, and Onwuzurike are all veterans that Campbell identified as players who would be taking a rest day on Wednesday. If they follow the practice schedule that Ragnow implemented following a rest day last week, look for them to return to full practices on Thursday and Friday, and be ready to play on Sunday.
Paschal was injured twice in the game against the Vikings, briefly leaving the field before returning later. Despite the exits, he still played 52 of the team’s 60 defensive snaps (87%), which is a very high mark for any defensive lineman, let alone one who was working through an injury.
It’s not unusual for players who were injured in a Sunday game—especially with linemen—to get an opportunity to recover on Wednesday. That being said, the fact that Paschal is listed with an “illness”, and not an injury, is a good indicator he may not have any residual effects from being banged up in the game.
Limited practice
- None
Full practice
- RG Kevin Zeitler (groin) — Returned to practice
- G Christian Mahogany (illness, NFI) —Still on NFI: 6 days remain in the evaluation window
Zeitler injured his groin last Thursday, and despite working with trainers to recover, he was not healthy enough to play against the Vikings. As we turn the corner to Week 8, he is back on the practice field in full and headed in the right direction toward returning to his starting right guard position.
Mahogany continues to work through the evaluation process and has enough time remaining to practice this week, without a decision on his status needing to be made before the game. However, his window expires next Tuesday, so look for the Lions to address his status early next week.
No longer listed on the injury report
- RB David Montgomery (knee) — Injured in Week 6 but not on the injury report
- OT Dan Skipper (ribs)
- CB Carlton Davis (quad)
- S Brian Branch (knee)
Montgomery was also injured last Sunday, exited briefly, and returned to game action, but he was able to get a full practice in to start the week.
“No, he’s good. It was really one of those that he had pain, and he knows it’s in that area around the knee, and it’s kind of in the back,” Campbell said of Montgomery. “So, you’re trying to figure it out and it’s painful and once they got him off and they tested it, looked at it, he started feeling better. And then you kind of are trying to look at it on the monitor. […] But he got kneed in the back of the knee, just kind of the meaty part, so it was more like a bruise or contusion, which is great. He bounced back, he’ll be good. Nothing should come from this. So, we’re thankful for that, I know he is too.”
The remaining players in this section are no longer listed on the injury report.
