Deonte Banks’ lack of hustle on a big play was a topic of discussion following the Giants loss to the Eagles.
New York Giants defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson holds his players accountable.
A few weeks back, Henderson was critical of cornerback Deonte Banks for his effort on a play that resulted in a 55-yard touchdown reception for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Now, Henderson has another gripe to pick with the guy who is supposed to be his top cornerback.
Impressive play from Jalen Hurts to avoid the sack

In the play above, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts scrambled out of the pocket on a third-and-long situation. Near the end of the video, you’ll see Banks slow up as Hurts runs past him, setting up a first down deep inside the Giants’ territory for Philadelphia.
Needless to say, Henderson was unhappy with Banks’ effort and called him out about it on the sidelines shortly after.
Deonte Banks either decided not to pursue Jalen Hurts near the sideline on that scramble, or he’s injured. He’s staying on the field, though. And DB coach Jerome Henderson was lighting into him on the sideline right when the play happened #Giants

Following the game, head coach Brian Daboll was asked about his team’s overall effort:
“I’m going to go back and watch it all. These guys have been busting it. Again, when the score is what it is, make no excuses. None of it was where it needs to be.”
When specifically asked about Banks (especially the third down play), Daboll tried to downplay the situation with his response:
“We’ll go back. We’ll take a look at all that stuff and whatever we need to address, we’ll address. But, the guys are putting effort into it each and every week. We’re just, unfortunately, not getting the results and it’s a results business.”
Reporters followed up by asking whether it was something that needed to be addressed at the moment, and, as expected, Daboll tried to avoid the topic.
“I’m not going to get into the sideline or coaching part of it. But, none of it was good enough today.”
When the media made one last effort to get something out of Daboll about the situation, asking why a guy like Banks isn’t benched in a situation like that, the Giants head coach still wouldn’t budge.
“I’m not going get into… None of it was good enough today. I’ll leave it at that.”
Banks explained the play this way:
“I really just thought he was gonna slide or whatever, but it was a bad play by me. Bad effort play by me. I think I could have made it.
“I play this game because I love this shit. Sometimes you get frustrated out there when shit’s not going your way.
“That’s me just letting the emotions get the best of me.”
Banks has had his fair share of struggles as the Giants’ No. 1 cornerback, and effort on plays like this makes it worse. Sure, players are prone to making mistakes, but when the effort is lackadaisical, it makes it even more frustrating, especially for a team that hasn’t been playing well.
This is yet another issue that coincides with the Giants 2-5 start to the season.
