Refreshed after the bye week, Rams host Las Vegas
With the panic meter ticking away for both teams, the Los Angeles Rams (1-4) face off with the Las Vegas Raiders (2-4), a battle of struggling teams sitting in last place of their respective divisions. The Silver and Black will caravan across the Mojave Desert for a 1:05 p.m. PST kickoff this Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
Along with their similar records and divisional bottom-dwelling position, the two teams share another two other similarities, both on defense. a propensity for giving up points and an inability to stop the opponent’s run game.
The Raiders are allowing 27.2 (28th) points and have given up 140.3 yards (23rd) rushing per game, a total of 842 yards (24th) at a 5.0 per carry clip (29th) and seven rushing touchdowns (t24th). L.A. gives up 27.8 points per game (29th) and on the ground has ceded 788 yards (20th), 157.6 per game (32nd) with 4.8 yards (26th) a carry and six touchdowns (t17th).
On offense, while the Rams run game is trending upward in the past two weeks, it still ranks towards the bottom of the NFL. L.A, has trodden for 97.4 yards per game (27th) on 487 total yards (30th), averaging 4.0 per tote (25th), and hit paydirt 6 times (t10th). In the red zone, the Rams have leaned on Kyren Williams, he’s carried 24 times for 69 yards and six touchdowns.
Matthew Stafford and the passing game have not bailed out the rush attack. Per game, he’s getting 226.6 yards (12th) on a 67.0% completion rate, but only three touchdowns (31st), a 85.8 QB rating (21st), and 6.8 yard average depth of target (24th). While all three Rams throwing touchdowns have come in the red zone, overall it’s been rough sledding, 10 of 26 for 38.4%.
Two areas the Rams need to either exploit or improve this Sunday are turnovers and explosive plays. The Raiders have committed 12 turnovers, most in the NFL. Can the Rams add to seven interceptions and five lost fumbles to go along only converting 2 of 9 4th down attempts? Will the Rams offense break out of its funk and create some big plays? So far, they have not scored a touchdown from outside of the red zone.
