Thanks to the nflFastR project and NFL NextGen Stats for the timely sources of data.
For those of you new to this, I will publish key QB stats each week judging how well the upcoming opponent QB has performed. Yes, O-Line, receivers, and play-calling impact these numbers but they are primarily QB measures. I will probably modify the charts throughout the season. Commentary will be brief but feel free to let me know in the comments that stats aren’t everything. (click charts for larger view)
Tyler Huntley has only 2 starts this year, but let’s look at his cumulative stats anyway.

- He hasn’t been backed up by much of a run game and with Huntley under center, Miami is the most run first team in the league (25th arsr, 32nd edp).
- Opponent passing defenses have been fairly easy and they are daring him to beat their zone (29th opd, 1st oz%).
- He has not been pressured much at all, but despite that, he scrambles a lot and takes even more sacks (28th pr%, 12th scr%, 9th sck%).
- He has a quick throwing time, which helps keep pressure low, but that isn’t impacting his passing depth as he throws the 7th longest passes of any QB (27th ttt, 7th adot).
- However, his accuracy is terrible, which limits yac and causes completions to be short (32nd cpoe, 31st yac, 23rd ay/c).
- Short completions + low completion rate + no yac + a lot of abandoned attempts = the 2nd to worst Yards per Attempt and the 4th to lowest net yards per dropback.
- With poor yardage efficiency, its not a surprise that he doesn’t get many first downs or TDs (24th 1st%, 32nd td%)
- On the plus side, he doesn’t turn the ball over much (23rd to%).
HOW WELL?
In all of the historical plots, he represents the last 2 weeks. You can see his week 5 was better than week 4, but still not good and much worse than Tua’s averages.
HOW FAR?
In week 5, he had good completion depth, but only averaged 2.9 yards in week 4.
TO WHO?
This is the season receiving for all Miami QBs combined. No surprise that Hill and Waddle are top 2 and fairly even.
HOW ACCURATE?
Tua had been generally accurate, but that fell off at the end of last year and neither Skylar Thompson (weeks 2-3) nor Tyler Huntley (weeks 4-5) have made any improvements.
HOW FAST?
Tua always threw the ball quickly, but Thompson and Huntley are also below average in TTT.
TO WHERE?
This is just week 5 for Huntley. No success deep or short, but some good throws between 10-20 yards and the screens to the right side added value.
