Veteran added for offensive line depth
The New York Giants are signing veteran offensive lineman Chris Hubbard off the San Francisco 49ers practice squad, head coach Brian Daboll said on Friday.
The Giants will have a roster spot open when Andrew Thomas is officially placed on injured reserve due to his season-ending Lisfranc surgery.
Hubbard, 33, is in his 12th NFL season. He has played in 94 regular-season games with 58 starts. Hubbard spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, five with the Tennessee Titans, and was with the Tennessee Titans in 2023.
Kyle Posey of SB Nation’s Niners Nation, which covers the 49ers, did not offer a positive assessment of Hubbard.
“He is…not very good,” Posey said “He got worked all training camp. Some of the beat writers said ‘if 61 is on your roster, that’s a bad thing.’ I would not hold out hope for him doing anything well, especially against competent players.”
Hubbard has experience at all five positions on the offense line. Per Posey, the 49ers were using him at left tackle during training camp.
Per Pro Football Focus, Hubbard has 3,242 career snaps at right tackle, 118 at left tackle, 224 at right guard, eight at left guard, and 31 at center.
Hubbard started nine games for the Titans at right tackle last season, finishing with a respectable 68.2 overall PFF grade. As a pass blocker, he allowed four sacks and 18 total pressures in 292 pass-blocking snaps, compiling a 95.9 pass-blocking efficiency grade. For his careerer, Hubbard has a 96.2 pass-blocking efficiency grade.
