How Saquon Barkley went from ‘Giant for life’ to Eagles – ESPN
It brings us to Week 7, when Barkley, no longer the fan favorite, returns to MetLife Stadium for the first time since signing with the division rival 90 miles to the south (1 p.m. ET Sunday, Fox). Barkley has learned what it means to switch sides in this rivalry — which began more than 90 years ago — built on moments like the Miracle at the Meadowlands. It should create an electric atmosphere complete with bubbling emotions. “I don’t expect a great reaction. I don’t expect to be booed,” Barkley said. “I look at it like this: The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Football Giants probably played in over 200 games. This rivalry was there before me, and it’s going to be there after me.”
Spadaro: Saquon Barkley says, ‘The most important thing is winning’ – PE.com
He admits, just a few days before returning to MetLife Stadium to play against his previous team of six seasons, the New York Giants, and in front of fans who adored him during that time, that he is still processing what it all means. Running back Saquon Barkley won’t let the moment engulf him, that’s for sure, but in the hours leading up to 1 PM on Sunday, it’s part of the internal conversation. “I’m going to treat it the same way I always treat it. I always have the mindset every game – and every game is special; you never know when your last one is going to be,” he said Wednesday at his NovaCare Complex locker before practice. “Obviously, there is some history there, for sure. Especially going back there, it will be interesting. I don’t have an exact answer – I’ll probably have a better answer later in the week.”
Giants-Eagles storylines: Replacing Andrew Thomas, the return of Saquon Barkley, more – Big Blue View
Return of No. 26. No, not Devin Singletary. Who might return from his groin injury this week. The other 26. The one who used to wear that number for the Giants. This will be Saquon Barkley’s first game at MetLife Stadium against the Giants since he signed with the Eagles as a free agent in the offseason. I am curious what type of fan reaction Barkley will get. I’m sure head coach Brian Daboll will be asked Barkley questions on Wednesday, as will players. Barkley is likely to speak to media in Philadelphia on Wednesday. All of that reaction will be interesting. Barkley has been healthy and is having a good season. He has 482 yards rushing on 91 carries, 5.3 yards per attempt. He is on pace for 1,366 yards rushing, which would be a career-high. Barkley has 92 receiving yards on just 14 catches. He is on pace for 1,626 total yards, which would be the second-most in his career. The Giants have gotten good production out of their three-headed running back by committee group. Singletary and rookie Tyrone Tracy have 103 carries for 429 yards between them, 4.17 yards per carry. The Giants have gotten 25 receptions for 230 yards out of Singletary, Tracy and Eric Gray. It will no doubt to interesting to see how Barkley fares in his ‘Revenge Game.’
Eagles-Browns Film Review: Some good stuff on offense to build on – BGN
This play drove me insane. This is 2023 all over again. I’m fed up with hearing people say that if Saquon Barkley picks up this blitz, then Hurts has an easy throw to DeVonta Smith in the middle of the field. Well, guess what, the whole point of the other team blitzing is to create pressure on the quarterback. You can’t just say ‘well if Barkley blocks him everything is fine’ because I care about the process and not just the results. With two timeouts and on 3rd and 1, I wouldn’t say I like the process of running four verticals. Now, as I’m sure a lot of you have seen online, this is a play that Jalen Hurts audibles to. Does this mean it’s purely his fault? No. For a start, the coaches have to give him the option to audible into this play call. Secondly, I imagine he audibled out of a run because the Browns stacked the box and had about 7 men on the line of the scrimmage. I can’t blame Hurts too much for audibling to this because I don’t know his options. If he had a run or pass play to choose from, then he chose the correct play. I do not think you must live in this aggressive world on 3rd and 1. You can run a quick slant or use motion to create a short throw to pick up the first down and call a timeout. This play looks too much like the Eagles’ offense from last year, which is ironic, considering Nick Sirianni says that this is the play he called!
Nick Sirianni went full Nick Sirianni at the latest Philadelphia Eagles game – SB Nation
Football is a game of passion and I am always cool with people expressing it. That being said, I do think it is more than fair to expect your head coach to act like he’s been there before in general but additionally to be able to read the room. Philly has been in a funk since the second half of last year and, as noted, barely hung on to beat the lowly Browns. Unlike when Sirianni chirped at Indianapolis Colts fans when the Eagles beat them two years ago… this was his own fan group! In his home stadium! It smells like someone who knows they are up against it and expressing that how they see fit. Again, I support flexing when you have earned the opportunity to do so, but wow this is such a bad look for the head coach of all people. What’s more is given Sirianni’s antics over the years… he seems like someone who can dish it out but not take it.
Ahead of their matchup with the Giants, Eagles players reflect on their own personal football rivalries – Inquirer
After losses to the Cowboys, Brandon Graham’s DMs are flooded with “L’s” from kids across the Dallas area who’ve added him to their group chats to talk trash. “A lot of people come at me and talk a lot of stuff, because they’re Dallas fans, and then it makes me feel on the inside like, ‘OK,’” Graham said. “Then it becomes a back-and-forth every year, and then you just get trapped in it.” With the first big rivalry game of the 2024 season set for Sunday at MetLife Stadium, the Eagles are preparing for what’s sure to be one of the tensest environments yet — considering that Saquon Barkley left the Giants for the Birds in the offseason. But the Eagles are no strangers to big rivalry games.
Game Review – PHI 20, CLE 16 – Iggles Blitz
Zack Baun had 8 tackles. He didn’t have any big plays. His highlight moment came on a blitz when he ran over the RB. Baun did have a roughing penalty. Nakobe Dean led the team with 12 tackles. He was better on the re-watch than I expected. Dean was fine over the middle. He did struggle in space, missing at least 3 tackles. He’s got to do better than that. The safeties didn’t have a great game. CJGJ had 6 tackles and 2 PDs. One of those PDs was when he collided with Quinyon Mitchell and neither guy came up with the INT. The other PD was on a throw to the TE and was a good play. CJGJ got beaten a few times. He hasn’t been the playmaker the Eagles were hoping for and is an inconsistent tackler. Reed Blankenship had 3 tackles. He had a quiet game. The CBs were solid. Quinyon Mitchell had 3 tackles and had a couple of chances at the ball. CJGJ hit him on the one. The other pass was too tall and Mitchell couldn’t quite get to it. He was in good position. Isaiah Rodgers was out of position on a pass play that turned into a 35-yard gain.
Fantasy Football WR Report: Man, zone coverage performance ahead of NFL Week 7 – PFF
The Giants have played man and zone coverages at league-average rates this season and have performed better in zone. They rank in the top 10 in yards allowed per reception (9.0) and per coverage target (7.5) from zone while placing in the bottom 10 in both categories from man. A.J. Brown leads qualifying wide receivers (minimum 10 routes) in fantasy points per route run facing man coverage, while DeVonta Smith leads the Eagles’ wide receivers and ranks in the top 20 in that regard against zone. Both will have opportunities to produce again this week.
How Nolan Smith finally played like a 1st-round pick in his 23rd game – NBCSP
Smith’s Pro Football Focus grade for Sunday was a season-high 77.8. He averaged a 58.0 grade the first four weeks. Smith’s rookie year was an almost completely lost season. He averaged only eight snaps through the first 14 games before bumping up late in the season after Matt Patricia replaced Sean Desai as defensive coordinator. With Haason Reddick gone, Smith’s playing time has increased dramatically to about 25 snaps per game, but he didn’t have much to show for it until Sunday. The play along the sideline was by far the biggest of his career. “He sensed it, applied what we’ve taught him by the formation and had a great reaction and a great play and his speed allowed him to make it,” Fangio said. “I can’t remember who it was in an earlier game but (there was a similar) play that another team had shown and we practiced against it a couple weeks ago and he kind of remembered that and applied it. That’s learning football. And those are things you can’t put a price on.”
Commanders vs Panthers Wednesday Injury Report: Brian Robinson Jr. returns to practice – Hogs Haven
Washington’s offense wasn’t the same without RB Brian Robinson Jr last week. He didn’t practice all week before being ruled out with knee injury, but he was back on the field today. Quinn and QB Jayden Daniels were both excited to see him rejoin the team.
The McCarthy Chronicles: His seat is becoming hotter and hotter – Blogging The Boys
Still, these are not problems that the team should be dealing with in Year 5 of the McCarthy era. The culture should be well established, the offense should be capable of at least competing in shootouts, and there shouldn’t be so many miscommunications between your star quarterback and star receiver. There are plenty of cracks forming in the glass of this team right now, and the pressure in Dallas never lets up. McCarthy will get the chance to course correct, and he’ll need that to happen right away. Jones was adamant that he’s not going to fire McCarthy, but he also knows he won’t need to. If the former Packers coach can’t figure things out, his contract will merely expire, just as his predecessor in Dallas had happen. And if the cracks that are now forming turn into shattered glass, it will be very hard not to endorse the idea of pulling the plug on this coaching staff. Too many things have gone wrong since that Wild Card playoff game against McCarthy’s former team to stomach more of the same. There’s little guarantee that another coach can bring the change necessary in Dallas, but McCarthy has the credentials to figure things out before then. And if he can’t, then why is he even here?
Falcons place S Micah Abernathy on injured reserve – The Falcoholic
The team also signed Matt Hennessy to the active roster to replace Abernathy, giving them more depth on the interior of the offensive line with Drew Dalman still on injured reserve. Hennessy had been elevated to the gameday roster three times, meaning he had to join the 53 man if the Falcons wanted him active on gameday going forward.
