Who takes his place on the roster?
The Los Angeles Rams have announced the release of offensive tackle Geron Christian just a little more than a month after inking the street free agent. Christian was signed on September 11, the day L.A. announced that guard Steve Avila and swing lineman Joseph Noteboom would be placed on the Injured Reserve List (IR). Christian was only active in the Week 2 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He didn’t see any offensive action and only two special teams snaps.
Back in 2018, Christian was a Round 3 draft pick by the Washington Commanders and played in two games as a rookie before tearing up a knee. He was named starting left tackle in his second year, but again, was struck down by a knee injury. After the season, he was released, which started him on the NFL merry-go-round. Christian bounced through five teams, the Houston Texans (twice), Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans before coming to L.A.
Who will take Christian’s place on the active roster?
There are a couple of possibilities. Possibility #1, Joseph Noteboom’ recovery timeline from his high ankle sprain is towards its end. Reports are that he’s back at Rams practice and working out on the side. Depending on progress, he may be ready to be designated for return from the IR.
Possibility #2 could see receiver/returner Xavier Smith named to the roster. Smith is a three-time practice squad elevation and the limit is four. A decision is due status and since the Rams have previously named him as the primary kick returner going forward, this would as good as time as any to reward him.

Is Noteboom the right decision? A career backup with a long injury history and who could arguably get the “under-achiever” tag. Or should it be Smith? A second-year undrafted free agent who brings speed and wiggle to the return and possibly, the Rams offense.
