The Minnesota Vikings pulled off an excellent mid season trade for TJ Hockenson. He was traded between Weeks 8 and 9 of 2022 from the Detroit Lions. He’s been a great player for the team. It was a trade that worked out well for both teams. I think that is a rarity in trades and especially in a midseason trade.
Most midseason trades come from desperations. Prior to the first season at US Bank Teddy Bridgewater’s knee gave out. The Vikings were desperate and traded mid-preseason for Sam Bradford. Sam was great, with the exception of his health. It was a massive overpay to save the first season at the new stadium. The Lions were put in a weird situation this past week with star pass rusher Aiden Hutchinson breaking is leg. He’ll be out for the year. Next man up is easier said that done when it is your best player that went down.
We also have trades like the one that went down today. Devante Adams is headed to the NYJ to reunite with Aaron Rodgers. It will be interesting to see how the trade pans out. I don’t see them as one piece away. Also happening today, the Buffalo Bills traded for Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. Similar situation where they just wanted to boost their WR corps for a playoff run.
Time will tell if these deals pan out. It’s a high bar for the Bills and Jets. They’re looking for a ring. The Lions might be looking to make similar moves. I haven’t seen much smoke from Kwesi and the Vikings. That could mean they’re staying put or it could meant they’re playing it close to the vest. DT could be an option, but the most likely is to stick with the plan and the current roster at hand.
