Lions running back David Montgomery did the media rounds this week, and he revealed a great nickname for Detroit’s backfield.
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has been busy lately. On top of being one of the best running backs in the NFL, and signing a new two-year contract extension with the Lions, he has also been making his media rounds during Detroit’s bye week.
He’s gushed over his teammates and coaches on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams Show” on YouTube, and shared personal stories of mental health struggles on the “Fantasy Dirt” podcast, amongst other appearances. In his most recent stop, he joined Ian Rapoport on, “The Insiders,” to talk about his recent, “angry runs,” wins, his chemistry with fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs, and his willingness to run through a wall for Lions coach Dan Campbell.
“It’s been great,” said Montgomery when asked about the dynamic in the backfield between him and Gibbs. “I think it’s rare you are able to find two like humans who hold each other to a certain standard for one another because we know what we are capable of.”
Montgomery would go on to say the running back room is special beyond the top two, singing the praises of players like Craig Reynolds, Jermar Jefferson, and rookie Sione Vaki.

Perhaps the best development from Montgomery’s media rounds was this gem from an interview with former Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long. Montgomery revealed that Detroit’s backfield now has a new nickname:
“I think we got a new name going around. I think it’s Sonic and Knuckles,” Montgomery said. “I happen to be Knuckles, which is cool. I like that one.”
You be the judge: “Sonic and Knuckles” or “Rhythm and Bruise”?
And now, onto the rest of today’s notes:
