Mayer has been out for the past two weeks as he has been dealing with a personal issue. The team hasn’t given any details on Mayer’s situation.
With the move, Mayer will miss, at least, the next four games. He will be eligible to return November 17 at the Miami Dolphins when the Raiders return for their bye week. The Raiders are not required to pay Mayer’s salary while he is out, but they can opt to do so.
Mayer had four catches for 21 yards in the first three games of the season. He had 27 catches for304 yards as a rookie in 2023. The Raiders traded up to take Mayer with the 35th pick of the draft, in the second round.
The Raiders’ planned to use Mayer often in a double tight end set with rookie sensation Brock Bowers and that is still possible alter in the season. For now, Harrison Bryant and John Samuel Shenker will back up Bowers.
