For the second straight week, a Detroit Lions player has won a weekly award from the NFL. You can probably guess who.
To no one’s surprise, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week following his performance on “Monday Night Football” against the Seattle Seahawks. In that game, Goff went a perfect 18-of-18 for 292 yards and two touchdowns. He set an NFL record for most completions in an entire game without a single incompletion.
“He really found his rhythm early, and I thought he was seeing the field, played with rhythm, he had to move a little bit in the pocket,” coach Dan Campbell said of Goff’s performance. “I thought what really kickstarted him is he had to kind of move in the pocket, got spun around, and hung with (Jameson) Jamo (Williams) and hit him on the hook for the first down. It was big because he was rolling after that.”
And on top of all that, he also caught a touchdown pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown on a perfectly-timed trick play.
“I think that’s my first one too, ever,” Goff said of his touchdown catch. “I’m saying all the way back to seven years old—I think that’s my first one.”
This is the sixth time Goff has won the award, and his third time as a Lion. The last time he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week was in Week 6 last year after torching the Buccaneers for 353 yards and two touchdowns.
This is now the second week in a row the Lions have won a weekly award. Last week, punter Jack Fox won NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his impressive day against the Cardinals. It could have been three in a row, but somehow in Week 2, Aidan Hutchinson was not named NFC Defensive Player of the Week despite his 4.5 sacks.
