In wake of Jonathan Taylor’s injury, Colts add familiar face for extra running back depth

The Colts have brought back a familiar face to potentially help fill in for star workhorse Jonathan Taylor, whose availability is in serious question for Sunday’s game.

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that the team has re-signed undrafted rookie free agent running back Trent Pennix to the team’s practice squad and released placekicker Spencer Shrader in a corresponding taxi-man squad move:

The former North Carolina State standout signed with the Colts in early May, but was waived-injured in mid-August of this year—after spending OTAs and training camp with the Colts this offseason.

Via Colts.com:

“Pennix, 6-2, 234 pounds, was signed by Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent on May 9, 2024. Collegiately, he played in 54 career games (15 starts) at North Carolina State (2018-23) at tight end and running back. Pennix compiled 55 receptions for 712 yards (12.9 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. He also registered 41 carries for 240 yards (5.9 avg.) and one touchdown.”

The Colts re-signing Pennix to the team’s practice squad for backfield depth doesn’t necessarily portray optimism that star workhorse Jonathan Taylor will be available for Sunday’s road game against the AFC South rival Jacksonville Jaguars—after suffering a high-ankle sprain last weekend.

Pennix does already know the Colts’ playbook and offensive scheme; however, meaning that his learning curve should be relatively light, besides being a rookie out there if elevated.

Shrader filled in for injured Colts starting kicker Matt Gay during Week 1 and was 3 for 3 during extra point attempts. He impressed during training camp and preseason and could be a strong candidate to be re-signed to the team’s practice squad again, especially if another kicking need arises or other positions eventually get healthier.
