Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead joined Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andrew Whitworth on the “Fitz & Whit” podcast to talk major offseason storylines and a general outlook on the team and its strategy. How did Rams land on McDuffie trade?
Rams contemplated the idea of drafting multiple rookies in an effort to revamp corner back room. They looked at picks #13 and #29 overall, and asked themselves whether they wanted to watch 28 players come off the board for such a major need. This ultimately led them toward the path of aggressively pursuing Trent McDuffie and trading away pick #29 and some change.
LA also signed free agent Jaylen Watson who is a larger body that positively compliments McDuffie’s lighter frame.
Why trading first rounders works for Rams
Snead said he if he was taking over a team with a perennial history of losing that he wouldn’t recommend trading first round picks. It’s more a tool for 10-7 teams looking to take the next step toward contention, which is historically how Rams have deployed such trades.
Fitzpatrick joked that the Rams cross players off their draft board if they earn a first round grade.
How Rams identified Puka Nacua
Fitzpatrick asks Snead if they knew Puka Nacua would be an elite receiver. Snead said would have drafted him much earlier if they were that sure. It’s a story of how Rams are able to look past traditional measurables to find players who fit their culture and standard of performance.
