Could Colts trading for Vikings edge Jonathan Greenard be missing offseason move?

After reportedly missing out on Trey Hendrickson, the Indianapolis Colts appear to remain very active in the impact pass rushing edge market, where there’s still a glaring hole this offseason opposite Laiatu Latu.

Recently, the Colts have been connected as a potential trade partner with the Minnesota Vikings for their standout pass rusher Jonathan Greenard—among other interested suitors:

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the earlier asking price from Minnesota for Greenard via trade was a ‘Day 2’ pick, which the Colts still have two of—but along with it, comes the request for a new lucrative contract extension by Greenard’s camp.

Greenard still has cap hits of $22.15M (2026) and $22.3M (2027), but both would appear to be relatively cost-efficient in the current frenzied free agency market—if he had otherwise hit it as an unrestricted free agent.

Of course, Colts fans may know Greenard best from his prior tenure with the Houston Texans, their AFC South rivals, where the former 2020 3rd round pick recorded 23.0 career sacks over his first four pro seasons.

Limited by an eventual season-ending shoulder injury, Greenard is coming off a down 2025 season for the Vikings, in which he recorded 38 tackles (19 solo), 10 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, 47 total QB pressures, a forced fumble, and 3 passes defensed during 12 games (10 starts).

Per PFF, he earned a 74.2 overall grade this past season, including a +77.6 pass rushing grade.

However, still only 28-years-old, he’s just a year removed from a 12.0 sack, 80 total QB pressures, and 4 forced fumbles in his debut 2024 campaign with the Vikings, where he made all 17 starts—after inking a 4-year, $76 million deal that prior offseason.

Per PFF, during that prior Pro Bowl season, he earned a +80.8 overall grade, which was highlighted by a +80.0 pass rushing grade.

In fact from 2023-24, when most recently fully healthy, with both the Texans and Vikings, Greenard combined for 24.5 sacks during that same span—making him one of the league’s most productive pass rushers.

Having seen veterans Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam depart in free agency, yet signing Arden Key as a rotational piece, the Colts are realistically still engaged in potentially find a starting edge opposite Latu.

Could that be Greenard still yet?
