Vikings Free Agency Winners and Losers: Not a Lot So Far

The first few days of free agency have been fairly quiet for the Minnesota Vikings, so you wouldn’t think there would be a whole lot in the way of “winners” and “losers.” However, we do have enough data to determine a couple in each category, so let’s go ahead and take a quick look at […]

The first few days of free agency have been fairly quiet for the Minnesota Vikings, so you wouldn’t think there would be a whole lot in the way of “winners” and “losers.” However, we do have enough data to determine a couple in each category, so let’s go ahead and take a quick look at those.

Winner: Tai Felton

One of the first losses the Vikings suffered during the “legal tampering” period was seeing wide receiver Jalen Nailor depart for the Las Vegas Raiders on a three-year deal. That left an opening at the WR3 spot on the depth chart for the Vikings, and as it stands right now Felton is in the position to fill that role. Yes, he only had three receptions last season and saw basically no time in the offense, but the Vikings didn’t use a third-round pick on him so that he could spend his entire career being a punt gunner. As it stands now, Felton will be given ample opportunity to take that third receiver spot, and that’s a win for him.

Loser: Matt Daniels

Daniels came under fire a bit last year for some of the things that happened on special teams, notably the number of penalties that took place and a couple of coverage lapses. Now, he’s lost a player that performed very well for the Vikings in 2025 in punter Ryan Wright. The Vikings have not made a move in free agency to find Wright’s replacement yet, but they’ll have to evaluate not only said replacement’s skills as a punter, but also as a holder. Wright performed incredibly well in that capacity over the past couple of seasons and helped Will Reichard to flourish last season as a result. Hopefully he can find an ample replacement.

Winners: Levi Drake Rodriguez and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins

While Jalen Redmond took a step forward for the Vikings in 2025, his fellow young defensive linemen found themselves in the shadows of a pair of highly-paid veterans last season. They both showed flashes when they got their opportunities, and with both Jon Allen and Javon Hargrave officially being released by the Vikings yesterday, both of these young players will both likely be called upon to play larger roles in 2026. The Vikings will still likely focus on the defensive front early in the 2026 NFL Draft, but I would still expect both Rodriguez and Ingram-Dawkins to be a much more siginficant part of the Vikings’ d-line rotation this upcoming season.

Loser (pending): J.J. McCarthy

From everything that’s circulating on social media, it certainly seems like Kyler Murray signing with the Vikings is a formality at this point. That’s bad news for McCarthy, who it appears is destined for the proverbial Spartan hillside after just ten NFL starts. Now, I’ve gone on record saying that I think moving off of a quarterback with just ten NFL starts is a fairly asinine move and that Murray doesn’t appear to be a great fit for what Kevin O’Connell wants to do on offense. But it appears I’m pretty firmly in the minority on this one and, well, I’m not the one coaching and/or GMing for my job in 2026, so Murray it is. Hopefully he’ll be successful, but much like our friends at the FanDuel Sportsbook, I’m not sure it’s something I’d bet on at this point. . .the Vikings still appear to be the favorite to finish last in the NFC North in 2026, which would be the first time they’ve finished there since their final season in the Metrodome.

Who are your winners and losers for the Vikings, or anywhere else around the NFC North, three days into free agency?
