The Minnesota Vikings have reversed course on their plans for one of their veteran running backs.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Vikings and running back Aaron Jones have agreed to a revised contract that will keep him with the Vikings for this coming season. Leading up to the start of free agency, the word had been that the Vikings were going to release Jones, an move that would have saved them nearly $8 million against their salary cap. Instead, Jones has agreed to reduce his base salary to $5.5 million to keep his spot on the Vikings’ roster.
Jones had a bit of a down year for the Vikings in 2025, as injuries limited him to just 12 games. He rushed for 548 yards, second on the team to Jordan Mason, and found his way to the end zone just two times. He turned 31 in December and will likely continue to take more of a backseat to Mason in the Vikings’ backfield as the two backs function as a tandem in the team’s backfield.
This move likely also pushes the running back position down the list of the Vikings’ needs in free agency and/or the 2026 NFL Draft. The team would be well-served to find a player who could be the heir to Jones in the near future, but the need isn’t as urgent as it was prior to this move.
What do you think of Aaron Jones staying in Minnesota, folks?
