The Philadelphia Eagles need a new edge defender after losing Jaelan Phillips, who they reportedly had interest in re-signing before he left to join the Carolina Panthers.
The team reportedly made an offer to Trey Hendrickson before he joined the Baltimore Ravens earlier on Wednesday. They’re also rumored to be in the mix for Maxx Crosby but that’s no sure thing.
There are a couple more updates to the Eagles’ search for a pass rusher on Wednesday afternoon:
1) Bradley Chubb is no longer an option.
Chubb seemed to make a lot of sense for the Eagles since he previously played for Vic Fangio in both Denver and Miami. Signing him also wouldn’t have impacted Philly’s compensatory pick formula since he was released by the Dolphins.
Chubb is off the board, however, after reportedly signing a three-year, $43.5 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. So, there goes that.
ESPN was first to mention the Eagles’ potential interest in Greenard over the weekend. The Athletic also reported on the Eagles’ interest in him earlier on Wednesday.
Now Dianna Russini is adding that the Eagles are in contact with Greenard’s representation about a potential contract extension should Philly and Minnesota make a deal. The Vikings would have to permit the Eagles to make contact with Greenard’s agent in such a situation, so, it seems like a deal might get done there … assuming the financial implications can be worked out.
Greenard reportedly desires a new deal two years after signing a four-year, $76 million contract with the Vikings. His current $19 million annual value ranks him 22nd among the highest-paid edge defenders. Moreover, Greenard currently has no more guaranteed salary remaining. One would think the 28-year-old is looking for more security in that regard.
It’s unclear what the Vikings are asking for to acquire Greenard. The guess here is the Eagles might be able to get it done with the third-round pick they acquired from the New York Jets in the Haason Reddick trade two years ago. It’s a high third-round selection and I can just envision Howie Roseman pointing out to NFL insiders how he ultimately turned Reddick into Greenard. But that’s just a guess on the value. Maybe it’s more, maybe it’s less.
Seems like we should get some resolution here sooner than later.
