The Los Angeles Rams extended Trent McDuffie and whether you like the signing or not, the marker for cornerbacks this offseason has likely shifted.
If McDuffie just earned his major extension, what’s a player like Christian Gonzalez in New England going to be worth?
Patriots know floor for Christian Gonzalez contract extension now (patspulpit)
“The cornerback market has been reset in the NFL once more. Trent McDuffie, who recently was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams, signed a new four-year contract extension on Sunday at a total value of $124 million.
Averaging $31 million per year and including $100 million in guarantees, McDuffie now sits atop the rankings at his position in both categories. How long he will remain in the top spot will be seen, however, because there is a clear candidate to surpass him in all of those categories in the near future: New England Patriots standout Christian Gonzalez.“
The Rams just shifted what this free agency cycle could look like, especially in the defensive back market. The Rams have extended Quentin Lake, Cam Kurl and now McDuffie. Other teams certainly will have to consider those moves as they look to extend or add their own defensive back help.
This could be a wild free agency period around the NFL, and it usually is, so gear up for another wild round!

How Darious Williams’ retirement impacts the Rams’ salary cap (ramswire)
“Williams announced his retirement from the NFL after eight seasons, winning one Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021. When it comes to the salary cap, his retirement works the same as if the Rams were to release him.
With Williams retiring, Los Angeles will save $7.5 million in cap room this year. His cap hit was slated to be $8.67 million in 2026, but he will now leave behind only $1.17 million in dead money. Therefore, it’s a net savings of $7.5 million.“
