The Arizona Cardinals plan to release Kyler Murray next week, the latest in a series of massive red lights when it comes to extending quarterbacks who have never won anything before. Because Murray is still owed so much money the Cardinals, he’s expected to sign with a new team for the vet minimum as anything less than $36 million will be offset by Arizona anyway.
This makes Murray a very cheap starting option for a team out there, which only matters if Murray is healthy and can play the quarterback position at a high level. Neither has proven to be true for a long stretch of time.
Murray, 28, only played 5 games in 2025 and 8 games in 2023. He played all 17 games in 2024 but Arizona finished 8-9.
Seven seasons since being the number one pick, Murray has a 0-1 playoff record.
The Cardinals will look a bit different in 2026, starting with new head coach Mike LaFleur. The team could stick with Jacoby Brissett but most likely won’t enter the season with only one option. Jimmy Garoppolo reuniting with LaFleur must be on the table. If they do, then Brissett would be a bridge until more quarterbacks become available in 2027.
Murray could go any number of places. With several more vets expected to be released or traded, including Tua Tagovailoa and Geno Smith, there will be teams on the market for someone who needs a chance to prove himself again.
