INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Dexter Lawrence’s elbow “wasn’t great” in 2025 when Lawrence had a down season, according to New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen.
Lawrence suffered a dislocated elbow in 2024 that cost him the final five games of the season. That year, he had a career-high 9.0 quarterback sacks in just 12 games. In 2025, he had a career-low 0.5 sacks
“I’m not sure that elbow was great all year. I think that bothered him a little bit,” Schoen said. “But it’s never just one person on defense. The defense as a whole I felt like could have played better. It’s definitely not Dexter.”
Schoen said Lawrence’s 2024 season might have been an “outlier” for a 6-foot-4, 340-pound nose tackle.
“Nine sacks might been an outlier the year before, so the expectation rises,” Schoen said. “That’s rare for a nose tackle. That’s insane for a nose tackle to get nine sacks.
“It’s in there, he still has a lot of good years left. It wasn’t just Dexter last year. I can’t put anything on him. The expectation is for him to be on the team and to come back and have a really good season for us.”
Schoen said the Giants have not gotten calls from teams interested in trading for Lawrence, who will be entering his age 29 season.
“The plan is for Dexter to be on the roster,” Schoen said.
Lawrence has two years remaining on the four-year, $90 million contract extension he signed with the Giants. He has no guaranteed salary left on his deal. Schoen said Lawrence has not yet requested a new contract.
