After spending the last five seasons in the NFC East, former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson is joining Sean McVay’s staff. The Los Angeles Rams officially announced him as a senior offensive assistant on Monday.
Eagles fans don’t hold Johnson in high regard after his one-and-done season as the Eagles’ play-caller in 2023. But while there were certainly flaws with that offense (see: having zero answers for the blitz), it really could’ve been a lot worse. Case in point: Kevin Patullo’s failed stint as offensive coordinator in 2025.

The 2023 Eagles ranked seventh in cash spending on offense, by the way, while the 2025 Eagles ranked first by far.
After being discarded by the Eagles, Johnson joined the Washington Commanders as their assistant head coach and offensive pass game coordinator. He contributed to Jayden Daniels’ stellar rookie success in 2024. And Washington’s 2025 offense was relatively solid if you adjust for Daniels suffering multiple injuries and the Commanders being down to their third-string quarterback by the end of the season. Heck, it was arguably better than the Eagles’ offense … despite being $70 million cheaper.

Johnson seemingly left Washington because he was leapfrogged by David Blough, who was promoted from assistant quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. Johnson joins former Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury in leaving the Commanders for LA.
McVay is obviously regarded as one of the NFL’s top offensive minds, so, it’s interesting to see that he had interest in hiring Johnson. The guess here is that the 39-year-old will be an offensive coordinator again one day. And it’ll be interesting to see how he fares if/when that happens.
At the very least, we now know Johnson will make another return to Philly when the Eagles host the Rams this season.
