Tua Tagovailoa decision could be coming very soon as Dolphins plan for future at QB position

We’ve been hearing for weeks about how the Dolphins want to move on from former #5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, quarterback Tua Tagoavailoa, this offseason. While the team prefers to trade the 27 year-old, finding a team to take him off of the franchise’s hands may prove difficult due to financial reasons. In that case, Miami could end up cutting the former first round draft pick.

One NFL insider, thinks the Dolphins could publicly announce their plans regarding Tagovailoa soon — as in before the end of the NFL Scouting Combine which begins on Monday in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports had this to say in a column he published on Sunday.

“The Miami Dolphins’ immediate plans for the future of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa could be publicly announced before the end of the Combine. No one expects Tagovailoa to be back with the franchise. A member of the quarterback’s team even told me that the 2020 first-round pick won’t be with the Dolphins come Week 1 of the 2026 season.”

Pauline goes on to say that new head coach Jeff Hafley would prefer to sign Green Bay Packers backup quarterback, Malik Willis, this offseason, but that Miami’s lack of cap space could make it difficult.

“People I’ve spoken with believe Willis ends up with the Arizona Cardinals, as they are expected to cut ties with Kyler Murray.”

If the Dolphins do indeed part ways with Tagovailoa, but swing and miss on a signing of Willis, what would their quarterback plans be for the 2026 NFL season and beyond?

“People close to the situation believe that Ewers deserves the opportunity to prove he can lead a franchise in the NFL… If Ewers doesn’t work out as a starter, then Hafley and the organization can select their signal caller of the future during the 2027 NFL Draft. But many want to see Ewers get a shot as the weekly starter.”
