With the reshaping of the roster beginning this week with four players cut, including stars Tyreek Hill and Bradly Chubb, I asked the following question:
With all of the cuts that we have already seen today, who else should the team cut before free agency begins, or try to trade after the beginning of the league year? Additionally, were there any of the cuts that you disagree with, and why?
Below are some of your thougths and answers-
ArtistfomerlyknownasTua2Hill just wants to see this new regime build a roster with some staying power while keeping, trading, or drafting the right players.
So far the moves are on par with what needs to happen. I can’t wrap my head around the cap, dead money, or any of the money side of things – I’ll let all you experts lay it out there to help me understand. All I want is to see this new regime build something competitive, and sustain it. Although I realize the numbers are important to make that happen, we still need to see the right players resigned, traded, or chosen in the draft. That remains to be seen, but I think we are off to doing it right…but what do I know?
davidson11 believes that Tua will remain on the roster, I assume based on his stupid cap numbers.
Tua is definitely staying.
Luvs2drnk is concerned that they will get carried away with roster cuts, leaving too little talent to compete in 2026.
If this is the bulk of the major cuts being made this year (Sanders seems the most likely next candidate), and they release some of the fringe guys that aren’t likely to make the team anyway. That would put them at $20 mil under the cap. Restructures for Fitz and Jackson would add another $17 mil. That’s $37 mil for draft and first round of FA. Post June 1st Chubb adds another $13 mil.
Interesting note, Overthecap.com still has Chubb listed on the Dolphins which could mean he will be a post June 1st designee, whereas all the other players who have been cut have been deleted from the roster.
My biggest concern during this purge, is that they go too far and turn a team that could be a playoff contender to an absolute dumpster fire that nobody wants to play for (including their own players).
cyberflea points out that the new regime is going to build the new roster to compete in all seasons and all kinds of weather while also moving away from the injury-prone players.
No surprise releases thus far. The Dolphins were a finesse timing-based offense that was best suited for good weather conditions which was a recipe for failure in the month of December and January especially when all of your other AFC East opponents play in cold weather cities.
This new regime as Sully mentioned will build a Dolphins team that is just the opposite of what it used to be. Built to win in any weather conditions with players that are tough and not sitting on their couch injured collecting a paycheck. It’s baffling how many players former genius GM Chris Grier drafted and signed in free agency that had a history of injuries. Not going to happen going forward.
heatforlife has zero faith in Stephen Ross but believes that we just need a franchise QB to get back in the game.
we were the talk of the nfl today.how to tear a team apart .with josh still in his prime and drake maye a budding star this looks like another decade of futility .we should be use to it by now.anything ross touches turns to crape.i have no faith in any regime under him.the team has talent except at the qb position.get a franchise qb and we will be back in biz.
Gator68 sees a full rebuild on the horizon.
they cut Daniels which leaves two vacancies at Guard. Hill and Chubb had to go so that’s LB/DE and WR vacancies.. I don’t count westbrook. I see Ingold, Sanders and some of the veteran CBs going as well.. It kind of stinks but it appears they are going full rebuild. Tua stays til next year and we go with him and Ewers and some other cast off QB or late round pick knowing that this is a rebuild year.
I guess we hope that the new regime can draft way better than Grier and company and look to build the team from the trenches which i think they have hinted at. I think that if they can add some good interior lineman, a solid DE or LB and CB this year, replace the kicker and FB with late round picks.. possibly add a late round WR. IF they can navigate to a 6-11 year that sets up 2027 for the year to dump Tua and have a decent pick along with CAP relief to pursue some FAs…. 2026 is going to be a tough year but at least Grier and McD are gone.. looking forward to this new regime making solid changes in the Phins.
jimmythesaint1 points out a possible bust and an almost bust that the team needs to eventually move on from.
Jonah’s performance, or lack thereof, was rated 81st out of 81 guards rated. Wishful thinking that he improves to what, 60th? The decision to put him at LG proved to be a huge whiff. I can’t imagine that an entire new staff would just put him back at LG and hope he survives. So let’s see him earn an opportunity at RG? I don’t know. He has to prove he’s a starting caliber O lineman, and I can’t see the team just cutting him. The team needs him to contribute.
Austin Jax is a stand up dude, but sits way way way too often on Sundays, and it’s time to move on.
fmeIamadolphinsfan sees Jackson and Sanders as expendable pieces at their current cap hits.
I agree with the person who said Sanders. 6m a year is too much for a kicker, especially when he s not elite and you can easily draft a replacement in the 7th round. The only other person I would consider cuting is Austin Jackson. Solid when he s played, which isn’t a lot, but hasn’t lived up to his cap hit. But I wouldn’t be incensed if they keep him. The interesting one for me in Minkah. I don’t really have an opinion on what to do with him, it will be interesting to see what the new regime does.
Xpensive_Wino believes they should hold onto Tua to avoid accelerating his cap hit.
There are 43 million reasons why they should keep Tua. Even if he’s holding a clipboard next year. They need that money to start rebuilding…….
Miami7 isn’t a fan of trading back from a high draft pick. There’s certainly an argument to be had that just staying put and taking the best available player at that position is the route to go.
$37mil won’t even get them close to the neighborhood of a full roster – and that’s IF all 34 FA’s we no longer ‘really’ have under contract all signed for $1mil or less. They’ve got ALOTTA work yet to do.
Folks wanna talk about restructures & extensions and yada-yada…and they certainly have to play in those areas some but that’s also the nonsense that got em’ into the cap purgatory they’re in now – Grier’s favorite – kickin’ the can down the road. Sooner or later the piper calls due.
They will assuredly do what they can to prevent a complete dumpster fire but next year fans need to be prepared for some ‘try really hard but stink’ comin’. Unless this Willis kid comes on board & he’s the next Jayden Daniels, Mahomes, Jackson, Allen level elite (which…c’mon….this is the Dolphins – that ain’t happenin’) we’re lookin’ dumpster fire pretty damn square in the eyes for next year at least.
It’s kinda like the Gov’t. in ways – folks need to realize there is pain comin’ for years of neglect/idiocy before we can get back to where we’re strong again. Accept it & be strong & hold to yer plan, no matter how painful initially. It’s just where this trainwreck needs to head to get back on track.
The constant ‘trade back’ talk here amazes me. Yup…let’s get outta #11 cause we need warm bodies (whether conviction rests in a legitimate star candidate) so we can get 2 guys that we hope might someday turn into relatively solid starters. I just don’t get that mentality? Not saying it’s the ‘wrong’ thing to do if circumstances dictate but the eager willingness to just drop – the further down the ladder ya go the lesser the chances. We haven’t had a drafted STAR on this team in over 20 years! Well…maybe X, and we do have Achane now but he’s kinda outta nowhere LUCK more than any sorta strategic consistency.
Everybody talks about how great Tua was in 23’ – we didn’t beat a single team above .500! That guy shrinks the bigger the stage…but there were single games here & there that were special (love those stories). His IQ, or at least AWARENESS is…..scary ugly. Cold is Kryptonite. His body is (sadly for the kid) just not capable of NFL play. And Grier/McDork gave him the keys to the city banking on continued development. It’s time we put forth a concrete plan, stick to it & stop managing this team/organization like it’s a video game.
Sorry for the rant Luvs…I’ll head back to hibernation now.
krammm has seen all of this before.
Isn’t it great that JES is doing the same thing Grier did pre-Flores?
VS777 believes that Grier was fooling those above him for way too long!
Chris Grier fooled the Organization for way TOO long and screwed it ALL up. Amazing he made it as far as he did and for as long. This will be a difficult 2 years but last 2 years weren’t great anyway and this year was hot garbage. At least it woll be fun to see some new draft players hopefully succeed and be next generation. NEXT cuts are Jason Sanders 100% (salary way too high for a kicker). Obviously Tua via trade if possible. If not he s a post June 1 most likely (ouch). Luckily no more garbage 6M Zach Wilson on books. As much as I love Waddle if someone gives us a huge compensation first rounder plus picks we may have to take it. As great as he is he is more like an A++ WR 1A or high end 2. Austin Jackson gotta be traded if thats feasible. He hasn’t been on the field enough just cant justify another chance he injured as per the usual. Gotta go also. If Daniels gone then Jackson gone unless they can make it work
MiamiItaliano sees Tua as a post-June 1st cut, which seems likely unless someone wants to trade for him, with Miami still likely paying for some of his salary.
Ok this clears up the Tua cap hits for me. I think the most likely scenario is a post June 1st cut. The salary is too much for the Dolphins to even cover half of it for 2026, 2027 and 2028 in a trade.
As for the other cuts, I think Chubb could have been the other post June 1st cut. When Tyreek got immediately cut, along with Daniels and NWI, that should have got them enough under the cap to carry Chubb to June. But oh well, at least they’re gone.
FLexile sees this team as acting like a player playing through injury.
It is as though the Dolphins organization has been playing through a shoulder injury. Instead of having surgery and actually fixing the problem, they have played through pain. Using bandaids, voodoo and hokum they never really got healthy.
Hopefully the new group in charge is making all of the right decisions. Fixing the payroll and cap issues are problem number one to address, so good so far. Let the healing begin.
That’s our selection of random comments for this evening. It’s a mixed bag of how fans feel about what’s happening, what has happened, or what will happen. Unfortunatly all we can do is hope and pray that maybe they got it right or will get it right this time. Thank you, as always, to each of you who takes the time to read and answer our questions of the day.
