Rumors are starting to swirl. It’s that time of year. The start of free agency is still some time away, but it is quickly approaching. The Indianapolis Colts are looking towards free agency, the draft, and how their roster will shake out overall. One of the biggest wild cards is Anthony Richardson. He appears to have no real future with the Colts, but how robust is the market for his services?
There is usually some sort of market for any player. Some team out there wouldn’t mind kicking the tires on a player like Richardson. He is young, big, and athletic. He also comes with a potential chip on his shoulder which could serve as motivation to prove his doubters wrong. There is an opportunity for Richardson to reinvent himself, but that doesn’t mean the market for his services is a strong one; at least not this year.
An unsubstantiated rumor has the Colts asking for two first-round picks. Anyone can say anything on the internet, and this is proof. If Richardson fetched anything higher than a sixth, it would be a successful transaction for the Colts. It’s impossible to not feel for the man, but the lingering question is, can he even see well enough? Put aside the maturity issues and the incredibly poor on the field stats, his orbital fracture left him with blurred vision. Maybe it has improved, but any team willing to take him on would be taking a big risk simply on his playing ability, let alone a visual impairment.
It is tough to say where Anthony Richardson will be to start the season, but the idea of a trade seems slim. Teams like the Vikings were rumored to have had interest in offering a huge haul to move up in the draft, so intrigue could still linger in the league. The issue now is that teams have more data and a slew of injuries from which to evaluate. Richardson’s days with the Colts might be numbered, but they might also be longer than you think.
