Giants news, 2/5: Dawn Aponte hired, Matt Nagy’s impact, Jeff Stoutland

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Matt Nagy is John Harbaugh’s type of offensive coordinator — will it work? | The Athletic

Nagy’s scheme should feature comfortable concepts for Dart, especially considering the crossover between Nagy and former Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Kafka spent five years on Reid’s staff in Kansas City, including the 2017 season alongside Nagy, before joining the Giants as offensive coordinator in 2022. Dart operated an offense last season formed by melding some of Kafka’s influences from Kansas City with head coach Brian Daboll’s scheme.

Bears quarterbacks were in the shotgun 71.4 percent of the time during Nagy’s four seasons, which was the eighth-highest rate in the league during that stretch. Dart was in the shotgun 79.9 percent of his snaps last season, which was the eighth-highest rate in the league. Mahomes was sixth at 82 percent. The offense will heavily feature the run-pass options that Dart has run since college, as well as the quarterback runs that were a major asset as a rookie. Trubisky ranked fifth among quarterbacks with 421 rushing yards in 2018. Dart was third among QBs with 487 rushing yards last season.

Tiki Barber: Theo Johnson will benefit from Matt Nagy hiring

Simms believes that Nagy’s approach aligns well with Dart’s strengths.

“I think Matt Nagy, I do think the way he runs an offense, it’s going to fit Jaxson Dart,” Simms told Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com. “Jaxson Dart has that playmaking, backyard football ability and I think Matt Nagy is going to enhance that because he’ll understand the player he has…He’s going to give the Giants some structure and some rules, and some offensive plays here, but he’s not going to wipe away his natural God-given ability and his feel for the game, that’s what I like.”

Staples we should look for in the 2026 version of the Giants’ offense include run-pass option, pre-snap motion, screens and dual-threat running back.

The Giants’ path back to the Super Bowl doesn’t need to be so long — and this is where it starts | New York Post

The goal is to still be playing games this time next year. The Giants haven’t been close for more than a decade. With John Harbaugh now running the show, what has to happen to move the franchise toward Super Bowl contention?

ESPN analyst Marcus Spears is not confident about the Giants hiring Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator.

“Look, this league is about results. You get judged on how do you develop guys. His development of young quarterbacks have been awful,” Spears said. “So i’m not indicting Matt Nagy as a bad coach. All I can look at is, the last time you had two young quarterbacks, they didn’t perform well, and now Jaxson Dart, going into his second year, is going to be under his tutelage. It doesn’t give me a lot of confidence, but maybe something has changed.”

Charlie Bullen’s impact

Odds of the team re-signing Jermaine Eluemunor? It’s going to come down to money and how much the Giants are willing to pay for him. If the numbers make sense, they should absolutely bring him back. While not an elite-level or All-Pro player, Eluemunor is a pro. He’s someone you don’t worry about on that side. There are certainly better players … there are also a lot worse.

It’s unlikely Eluemunor gets a deal worth more than Thomas ($23.5 million annually), his running mate on the other side. One front office executive estimated he’d get “slightly” more than when he originally signed with the Giants, somewhere near $10 million per year. A high-profile agent put Eluemunor’s value around $7 million.

2026 NFL Free Agency: Predicting the highest-paid free agent at every position | PFF

Interior Offensive line: Tyler Linderbaum Projected contract: Four years, $70.89 million Across his four seasons, Tyler Linderbaum has proven to be one of the NFL’s premier run blockers on the interior, earning above a 78.0 PFF run-blocking grade in each season. Over that span, he’s proven to be elite regardless of scheme ranking in the 85th percentile or better in both gap and zone concepts. The recent rookie extensions of Kansas City Chiefs center Creed Humphrey (four-year, $72 million) and Philadelphia Eagles center Cam Jurgens (four-year, $68 million) will be the likely starting point for any team looking to acquire Linderbaum. Yet, given the need for quality blocking on the interior for many franchises, Linderbaum could quickly jump to the top of the list, becoming the highest-paid center in the NFL.
