NY Giants news: Matt Nagy hired as John Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator

The New York Giants are hiring former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy to be their offensive coordinator, according to numerous published reports.

The hiring of Nagy means all of the coordinators in place on John Harbaugh’s coaching staff. Nagy on offense, Dennard Wilson on defense, Chris Horton on special teams.

Nagy was head coach of the Bears from 2018-2021, compiling a 34-31 regular-season record (.523 winning percentage).

Nagy, 47, has been coaching in the NFL since 2008, and is a long-time Andy Reid disciple. He was an intern and quality control coach for Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2008-2012, then moved to the Kansas City Chiefs with Reid from 2013-2017. He served two years as quarterbacks coach and two as offensive coordinator.

After his Bears’ tenure ended, Nagy returned to Reid’s staff in 2022. He served first as quarterbacks coach, then as offensive coordinator the past three seasons.

Nagy left Reid’s staff at the end of the season to pursue other opportunities. He interviewed for head coaching jobs, including with the Tennessee Titans, but ultimately landed with the Giants.

Harbaugh coached under Reid with the Eagles, and has long considered him a mentor.

Davis Webb of the Denver Broncos, Shane Day of the Los Angeles Chargers, Jim Bob Cooter and Alex Tanney of the Indianapolis Colts, Kliff Kingsbury and Brian Callahan were all considered candidates for the job.

Ultimately, Harbaugh, who always has a preference for experienced play-callers on offense, chose Nagy.
