More insight into Brian Daboll not being the Eagles new offensive coordinator

Early in the Eagles’ search for a new OC, it was reported that the team considered Brian Daboll one of their top candidates. The former Giants head coach has worked with Nick Sirianni, and had coached Jalen Hurts at Alabama, plus he’s a veteran play-caller. Shortly after he interviewed for the Eagles offensive coordinator position, it was revealed that he preferred to land a head coaching job or go take the OC job with the Titans.

That ultimately is what happened, with Daboll officially joining the coaching staff in Tennessee.

There was a lot of speculation initially about why Daboll would prefer the Titans over the Eagles, and whether his decision was an indictment on Philadelphia’s head coach, quarterback, or fan base.

For what it’s worth, Jeff McLane reported that Daboll was never even offered the Eagles OC job:

The Eagles didn’t offer Brian Daboll the OC job, nor have they yet to officially offer the job to anyone, per sources, but he was a top target, went through a formal interview process, and had support from key individuals in the organization. He told the Eagles that he was pursuing other opportunities. They continued on with their process. Doesn’t mean they won’t find a suitable replacement, but they are now two weeks removed from Kevin Patullo’s ouster.

The lack of offer doesn’t necessarily mean they didn’t want Daboll. They might not make an offer when they already know the answer is a rejection. McLane’s reporting indicates that the Eagles also didn’t officially make an offer to Mike McDaniel. One would think the Eagles would’ve done that if they had a more realistic chance to land him.

Mike Garafolo had the following to say about Daboll being intrigued by the prospect of reuniting with Hurts.

Multiple reports also linked Daboll to the Titans due to the former head coach wanting to work with Cam Ward. The Giants apparently offered a huge package to Tennessee last year to move up to No. 1 and draft Ward, according to Jordan Schultz.

“Sources say the Giants made a massive push last year to trade up to No. 1 for Ward, offering the No. 3 pick, a 2025 first-rounder, and multiple Day 2 picks. The Titans declined.“

The Eagles have held many interviews since bringing in Daboll for the OC job, and while they’ve lost out on most of them, they’re taking their time and conducting a thorough search for their next play caller.
