With the Miami Dolphins hiring new wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert from the Tennessee Titans this weekend, it was time for the defense to get in on the fun. On Monday, NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported that the team had hired Green Bay Packers defensive backs coach Ryan Downard — with a separate social media post confirming that Downard would coach Miami’s secondary as well.
Downard — 37 years old — comes to Miami after spending the past eight seasons with the Packers. He started as a defensive quality control coach, became the team’s assistant defensive backs coach, took on the role of safeties coach, before becoming the main defensive backs coach in 2023.
Prior to his time in Green Bay, Downard coached with the Cleveland Browns.
A former college player, Downard attended Eastern Michigan University. In his redshirt freshman year, he recorded six interceptions and was named as an honorable mention for the All-American team.
