Eagles reportedly interview Matt Nagy for offensive coordinator

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is the latest Philadelphia Eagles OC candidate. The Birds interviewed the 47-year-old for their vacancy, according to a report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

It’s noted that Nagy is “currently exploring a few OC options” after losing out to Robert Saleh for the Tennessee Titans’ head coaching job. Nagy’s contract expired and it looks like the Chiefs are going to bring Eric Bienemy back to KC to replace him.

Eagles fans are already well-aware of Nagy for one reason or another. He has local roots from going to high school in Lancaster County and playing college football at Delaware. Nagy had a seven-year Arena Football League quarterback career before getting his first NFL job on Andy Reid’s staff in 2008.

Here’s a snapshot of his pro coaching career:

  • 2008-2009 — Philadelphia Eagles coaching intern
  • 2010 — Philadelphia Eagles coaches’ assistant
  • 2011-2012 — Philadelphia Eagles offensive quality control coach
  • 2013-2015 — Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach
  • 2017 — Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator
  • 2018-2021 — Chicago Bears head coach
  • 2022 — Kansas City Chiefs senior assistant and quarterbacks coach
  • 2023-2025 — Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator

In eight years as an offensive coordinator or head coach, the offenses that Nagy has been part of have an average rank of 19th in yards (rounded from 18.75) and 18th in points.

The strongest year on his record is 2017, when Reid handed play-calling over to Nagy in early December of that season. The Chiefs finished fifth in yards and sixth in points that season.

  • 2017 pre-Nagy play-calling: Chiefs averaged 24.7 points per game and 358.6 yards per game
  • 2017 Nagy play-calling: Chiefs averaged 27.3 points per game and 397.3 yards per game

Nagy was then hired by the Bears (where he overlapped with Vic Fangio for one season) and he oversaw some pretty lackluster results before being fired:

  • 2018 Bears offense: 21st in yards, 9th in points
  • 2019 Bears offense: 29th in yards, 29th in points
  • 2020 Bears offense: 26th in yards, 20th in points
  • 2021 Bears offense: 24th in yards, 27th in points

In fairness, the Bears had some bad quarterbacks during that stretch; Mitchell Trubisky was the starter for three years before Justin Fields and Andy Dalton split time in 2021.

Nagy returned to KC in 2022 and served as Patrick Mahomes’ quarterbacks coach in the year the Chiefs beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl (boo). He was then promoted back to OC in 2023. A look at those offenses:

  • 2023 Chiefs offense: 9th in yards, 15th in points
  • 2024 Chiefs offense: 16th in yards, 15th in points
  • 2025 Chiefs offense: 20th in yards, 21st in points

All told, it’s hard to make the case that the Eagles hiring Nagy is a high ceiling move. It would seem to be more about striving for some level of competency.
