Detroit Lions passing game coordinator David Shaw is the latest coach to be given an opportunity at a coordinator position with another organization. On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they have completed an interview with Shaw for their open offensive coordinator position.

Shaw has been coaching football for over 30 years, with his most prominent position as head coach at Stanford University from 2011 to 2022. While he’s best known for his time at Stanford, he has over a decade of NFL experience, most recently joining the Lions in 2025 as their passing game coordinator.

While a lengthy history of success as a coach certainly helped him land a job in Detroit, he also has a longstanding relationship with former Lions offensive coordinator John Morton, going back to the late 1990’s during their time with the Raiders.

Here’s Morton discussing how valuable Shaw was to helping him on game days, while the former OC called plays from the booth:

“Yeah. It helps out a lot because if you don’t have anybody down there that you can trust, then I probably would go down there. Like I said, our coaches are awesome. (coach) Dan (Campbell) and David Shaw and all of our coaches. It’s been great, the communication, we’ve learned each other in the preseason which was really good. So, I think it’s awesome to have him down there. He’s done it, he’s been the head coach, he’s just another pair of eyes that can help Jared (Goff) during the game and Dan, so I love it.”

With a history of learning and coaching under great offensive minds such as Jon Gruden, Sean Payton, Jim Harbaugh, and Brian Billick, Shaw brings a strong resume to his coaching interviews.

We’ll have updates on Shaw’s status and the rest of the Lions coaching and front office staff news in our annual 2026 Detroit Lions coaching news with our tracker.
