The Miami Dolphins are hiring Green Bay Packers VP of Player Personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as their next General Manager, per a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
Sullivan, 50, has been a member of the Packers’ front office since joining in 2003 as a training camp intern. He since ascended the organization’s ladder and was named the VP of Player Personnel in 2022. Russini adds that the Dolphins’ philosophy is to hire their GM, then pursue a new head coach.
The obvious question is how this impacts the New York Giants’ pursuit of Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. It was widely expected that the Dolphins would hire Los Angeles Chargers assistant GM Chad Alexander, who has worked with both John and Jim Harbaugh.
The expected connection between Harbaugh and Alexander was considered to be a significant mark in Miami’s favor in swaying Harbaugh. It’s possible that Alexander doesn’t want to leave Los Angeles, or that Harbaugh does in fact favor the Giants. If we’re looking for personal connections, it’s possible that the Dolphins favor Mike McCarthy or Packers’ DC Jeff Hafley — or that their focus has shifted in that direction.
Russini has since reported that the Giants have maintained open communications with Harbaugh’s camp in order to be as well prepared as possible for next week’s interview.
