NY Giants news, 1/8: Coaching search, Bobby Okereke, Cam Skattebo recovery

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

NFL coaching changes 2025: Latest firings, rumors | ESPN.com

Pros of the New York job: The Giants are still considered a marquee franchise playing in the biggest market. That can be enticing for candidates. They also have a young quarterback in Jaxson Dart who accounted for 24 total touchdowns and seven turnovers as a rookie. The roster has some building blocks with a No. 1 receiver (Malik Nabers), standout left tackle (Andrew Thomas) and high-end edge rushers.

Cons of the New York job: The roster still has a lot of flaws and holes. Depth is a concern. So too may be the structure of the organization and ownership. There is uncertainty with the health of owner John Mara, who was diagnosed with cancer. The Giants also elected to bring back general manager Joe Schoen despite a 13-38 record the past three seasons.

Boomer: Harbaugh perfect fit for Giants

O’Connor: Hiring John Harbaugh would give Giants credibility, toughness and biggest victory in years | The Athletic

The team is acting urgently. Everyone in the building, from John Mara to Steve Tisch to Joe Schoen on down, knows the stakes involved.

Too many adversaries see Harbaugh as the answer, and after hiring and firing four straight coaches in the post-Tom Coughlin era who were overwhelmed by the market and the job, the Giants absolutely have to hit this one a mile out of the park.

The New York Giants’ decision to retain their general manager despite another disappointing season has left many scratching their heads, but Mike Francesa believes he understands what’s happening behind the scenes — and why a veteran head coach with significant power is likely the organization’s next move.

“The facts are what they are and that he was going to stay and that they’re going to bring in, I believe, a veteran head coach who is probably going to get an expansive amount of power because he’s going to win arguments with a weak general manager,” Francesa said. “And that’s what you have right now. You have a weak general manager, especially if they bring in a strong head coach… “They need an experienced head coach. Two feet on the floor, eyes straight ahead. They need a disciplinarian. They need that in the worst way.”

So, you want to be the next head coach of the New York Giants?

John Harbaugh, step on up. Kevin Stefanski, sit right here. You’ve been in the building before, Antonio Pierce. Go past the Vince Lombardi trophy you helped put in that case to your left and head upstairs.

Kevin Stefanski has already checked off plenty of Giants’ coaching search boxes | New York Post

There are no sure things. John Harbaugh shook free from the Ravens on Tuesday and even for someone with his track record, concerns about possible staleness after nearly two decades in Baltimore will need to be investigated.

Kevin Stefanski actually prefers not to call the plays on offense – he wants to be more of a CEO-type head coach. He had dinner with the Giants last night and interviews with them today. A strong candidate.

No. 2: New York Giants. The Giants have been trying to find some kind of consistency since Tom Coughlin. Obviously the end goal is getting back to the Super Bowl and winning championships, but for now fans would just settle for Harbaugh’s consistent organizational team building.

One thing we now about the Ravens’ coach is that he’s brilliant at managing his rosters and maximizing individual talent through his approach. This makes him a natural fit for the new Giants era where Jaxson Dart, Adbul Carter, and Cam Skatterbo are all in need of maturity to realize their tremendous potential. This franchise is desperate for someone to come in, steady the ship, and turn the page on the endless churn of head coaches who have failed.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Bullen’s name has surfaced multiple times among prospective head coaches, noting significant improvements in the Giants’ defense under his leadership — including better rankings in points allowed, total yards, and takeaways.

Edge rusher Brian Burns praised Bullen’s football knowledge, straight-shooting approach, and ability to bring out the best in players, saying he has played the best ball of his career. Rookie linebacker Abdul Carter echoed the support, calling Bullen “Chuck” and stating, “He inspires us. When he holds guys accountable, he doesn’t call guys out, he calls guys up… If I had to pick a defensive coordinator, I would say Chuck.”

“In my head, I felt like this season I was kind of kicking for my life, which, which I think I came in every day, like how it could be my last day being on two different practice squads,” said Sauls. “Knowing the job is so up in the air sometimes. I think that process and that mindset kept me really sharp every single day…Every day was a competition for me, you know what I mean? So at the end of the day, it’s kicking footballs, you know, and I’ve been doing that for five years in college.”

Final NFL QB Rankings After 2025 Season | Bleacher Record eport

17. New York Giants Grade: C. The New York Giants took the wrong path but ended up at the right destination.Head coach Brian Daboll remained adamant about Russell Wilson as the team’s starting quarterback. By Week 4, rookie Jaxson Dart was in the lineup. The team had been trending downward since Daboll won NFL Coaching of the Year in 2022. Quarterback was never fully settled, with Dart finally looking like the building block the team needed at the position.

Now, the Giants can go into the 2026 season with Dart and a new coaching staff leading the way, as well as Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo back in the lineup to make the offense far more potent.

10 ChatGPT prompts Joe Schoen may be using during Giants’ coach search | New York Daily News

Joe Schoen said Monday that he is integrating “AI” into the team’s coaching search. Pat Leonard used ChatGPT to generate 10 prompts and answers that Schoen might consider deploying to narrow his search, including which Giants coaching candidate is most likely to be confrontational with Pat Leonard of the Daily News; Which Giants coaching candidate would be the best hire if Joe Schoen wants to be able to fire that coach in the future and still keep his job; and which Giants coaching candidate would be best at holding players accountable and restoring a solid culture to the team.
