Giants add two players for Thursday Night Football
Fullback Jakob Johnson and cornerback Duke Shelley were elevated by the New York Giants from the practice squad to the game day roster for Thursday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Johnson, a veteran fullback has been bounced on and off the roster since signing with the Giants in mid-August. He was waived by the Giants on Tuesday to make room on the 53-man roster for linebacker/special teamer Ty Summers, who was out of practice squad elevations.
Johnson was re-signed to the practice squad on Wednesday.
This will be the first elevation for Shelley, a cornerback in his sixth NFL season. With cornerbacks Dru Phillips and Adoree’ Jackson both unable to play due to calf injuries, elevating Shelley makes sense.
Shelley has played in 52 NFL games with 11 starts for the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and Los Angeles Rams. Shelley has significant playing experience as both a slot and outside cornerback, and that could be useful with the Giants having questionable depth.
The Cowboys elevated defensive end Carl Lawson and defensive back Amani Oruwariye from their practice squad.
