Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman will not be coaching the New York Giants, or any NFL team, in 2026. Freeman has informed NFL teams that he will remain at Notre Dame for the 2026 season.
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reported that “Freeman informed two NFL franchises that had been in communication with him about their jobs that he was staying at Notre Dame.”
The Giants are believed to have been one of those teams.
Freeman, 39, agreed to a restructured contract that placed his salary in the “top tier” of college coaches. His contract at Notre Dame now runs through the 2031 season.
Freeman is 43-12 (.782 winning percentage) at Notre Dame. He has never coached at the NFL level.
The Giants, 3-13 with one game remaining, have been connected to a number of coaches as their search for a permanent replacement for Brian Daboll will kick into high gear next week when the season concludes. Among them:
Former Packers and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy; Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo; Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley; Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula; Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak; Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury; Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
We will begin to get more clarity on who really is, and is not, a candidate next week.
