Eagles activate Marcus Epps from injured reserve

The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced two roster moves ahead of their Week 14 Monday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Here’s an overview:

  • S Marcus Epps was activated from reserve/injured to the active roster.
  • S Andre’ Sam was temporarily elevated from the practice squad.

Note: teams can temporarily promote practice squad players up to three times each in the regular season and an unlimited number of times in the postseason.

Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.

MARCUS EPPS

The Eagles opened Epps’ 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve on December 3. He fully participated in three practices leading up to Monday’s game before being ruled questionable to play on the final injury report.

Epps is expected to replace Sydney Brown, who has struggled, in the starting lineup. The 29-year-old safety has logged 48 career starts (28 with Philly from 2020-2022) in 95 total games played (including playoffs). So, he hardly lacks experience.

It remains to be seen how Epps will hold up physically in his first start since suffering an ACL injury that caused him to miss most of the 2024 season. The New England Patriots waived him back in August, so, it’s fair to wonder if he can still play. But Vic Fangio can probably count on him being more assignment-sound as opposed to Brown.

The Eagles had an open roster spot for Epps to fill after the Birds waived Xavier Gipson on Sunday.

ANDRE’ SAM

The Eagles are temporarily elevating Sam for the second week in a row to provide more depth at safety in addition to his special teams contributions.

The Eagles will seemingly have four active safeties on Monday night: Reed Blankenship, Epps, Brown, and Sam.

Sam only has one elevation remaining for the 2025 regular season.

Chargers updates

As expected, the Chargers activated rookie running back Omarion Hampton (as well as depth players Hassan Haskins and Otito Ogbonnia) from injured reserve in time to play against the Eagles. Hampton figures to split carries with Kimani Vidal.
